Family Characteristics that Might Lead to Dysfunctional Health Patterns
A family becomes dysfunctional when misbehavior, conflict, neglect, and instability become a common phenomenon and everlasting. Psychologically, a dysfunctional family is associated with emotional disturbance among family members, leading to child abuse and neglect. Some family characteristics might contribute to actual or potential dysfunctional health patterns.
Poor communication, perfectionism, and drug abuse might lead to dysfunctional health patterns. Effective communication is a critical building block of a good relationship. When family members cannot listen to each other, individuals feel misunderstood and as if their voices are not heard. Poor communication might lead to mistrust, tension, and passive-aggressive behavior. When family members abuse drugs, the roles, relationships, and rules are organized and established around drugs (Tsuji, Aoki, Irie, & Sakano, 2021).
Additionally, perfectionism is a family characteristic that can lead to dysfunctional health patterns. When some family members have high expectations about others, it becomes hard for them to accept failure.
