The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) has two contradictory elements: health care as a right and as a commodity. Although both positions are contentious, I believe that no one has a right to something that is provided by other people or institutions. Food, for instance, is a necessity yet it is not considered a right. As a result, companies and restaurants are allowed to sell food but withhold it from those who cannot afford it. In this case, society or the government does not force people to be sedentary, eat junk food, or engage in hazardous activities. Likewise, I don’t expect society or the government to compel the public and healthcare facilities to pay or provide healthcare to people for free.
