Assessing Health Care Needs of Vila Health Through Windshield Survey
Assess the health care needs of a selected community by completing a virtual windshield survey and environmental analysis. Summarize the results of your assessment in a 4-page report.
Introduction
Health care must be evidenced-based, effective, efficient, and affordable. It must provide resources that meet the needs of the community as a whole. Nurse leaders must understand and thoroughly evaluate the environment to enable the efficient and equitable allocation of resources.
- What is a windshield survey? This is a method of gathering information about the status of a community either from a car or by foot. Conditions and trends in that community which could affect the health of the population are noted and the data provides context for making changes and/or improvements.
- What is an environmental analysis? This is an examination of the factors that can impact the health of a community. Examples include air quality, water quality, chemical and/or industrial waste, etc.
- What are social determinants of health? These are included as a part of the environmental analysis. There are five domains: economic stability, education quality & accessibility, healthcare quality & accessibility, neighborhood & built environment (human-made surroundings such as parks, green space, buildings/infrastructure), and social and community context (types of settings in which people engage). This assessment provides an opportunity to examine the prevailing health conditions in a community by completing a virtual windshield survey and environmental analysis based on communities within the Vila Health System virtual simulation. Although Vila Health is a virtual lab, the communities represented in the simulation are real, enabling you to conduct an actual community health assessment.
Preparation
Executive leaders at Vila Health have asked you to provide them with your assessment of the health conditions in one of the communities served by the Vila Health system. Knowing that a windshield survey is needed to validate any underlying assumptions about the needs of the community and inform evidence-based decision making and strategic planning, you have decided to conduct a first-hand exploration of the community, followed up by an environmental analysis. An environmental analysis examines the factors that can influence the performance of a health care organization, which is important in a rapidly changing health care environment.
To prepare for the assessment, you are encouraged to begin thinking about how an environmental analysis and windshield survey contribute to assessing community health care needs. In addition, you may wish to:

Healthcare should be evidence-based but also affordable, effective, and efficient. It should offer resources that address the need of the entire community, and thus nurse leaders should understand and extensively assess the environment to enhance efficient and equitable resource allocation. This assessment aims to examine a community's overall condition and needs in the view of public health. The paper aims to gain significant insights into the health status of the community through observing and recording different community aspects like population, education, businesses, healthcare services, and religion. It also evaluates the environmental elements impacting population health, like fundamental health issues, threats, and opportunities. The findings will form foundations for evidence-based decisions and reinforce executive leaders meeting community health needs, opportunities, and challenges.
Assessing, Via a Windshield Survey, the General Condition and Needs of a Community
The survey emphasizes particular areas of the community chosen based on their importance to public health. Such areas entail commercial districts, educational institutions, residential neighborhoods, healthcare centers, and recreational spaces. Observing such diverse areas could give an extensive comprehension of the community's health needs. Different physical environment aspects are relevant to the windshield survey. The aspects include the availability of recreational centers and parks, housing structures' condition, visibility of such environmental hazards as waste disposal sites, sidewalks and transportation accessibility, and public spaces' cleanliness. Such aspects are fundamental, considering their direct effect on the general well-being and health of the entire community. Such physical environment aspects act as the community's health enhancement coalition and address key health areas (Onyango et al., 2019). However, the windshield survey is a visual assessment, and thus it limits the capacity to gather comprehensive information concerning personal health conditions. Also, the survey relies on the observer's perspective, which may cause subjective biases, occur in a limited time frame, and thus may have missed significant health-related nuances.
Various factors should be considered in evaluating safety risks when conducting the survey. The survey addresses such factors as traffic risks, individual safety, and possible challenges of meeting unsafe and hostile situations. Safety precautions should be considered with surveyors, like avoiding dangerous areas at late hours, working in pairs, and knowing emergency contacts. From the windshield survey, it is possible to draw various significant conclusions. The community depicts a varied condition of the housing structures, with some properties requiring repair and others being standard. Public spaces like parks are well maintained and clean, thus fostering physical activities and community involvement. The limited transportation and sidewalks' accessibility present significant mobility issues, possibly affecting the capacity of the residents to access essential healthcare services and participate in different physical activities. The challenges of viable transportation impede a patient's capacity to travel or access essential health-promoting institutions like pharmacies and doctor's offices (Wolfe et al., 2020). The visibility of waste disposal sites and various environmental hazards shows the need to stipulate effective environmental health interventions to protect the community's well-being. Also, the survey shows an absence of healthcare centers in various areas implying possible inequalities in healthcare access. Such increased health disparities in some areas may be due to geographical isolation, lower health providers, and limited transportation access (Onyango et al., 2019).
Analysis of Environmental Factors
The survey attempts to answer the following: what are the pertinent health issues to the community? The analysis depicts various issues influencing population health like, economic, regulatory, technological, political, and social issues. Regarding technological issues, the community faces limited access to digital health services and healthcare information, possibly affecting healthcare results. In social terms, the community experiences significant healthcare inequalities and disparities in social health determinants like limited access to resources, education, and income inequalities. Regulatory issues entail regulations and policies influencing healthcare quality, delivery, and affordability. The community faces political issues concerning healthcare resource allocation, funding, and decision-making. A community characterized by disparities has social injustices in resource allocation and opportunities (Atkinson et al., 2019). It also faces such economic issues as an absence of affordable housing, unemployment, and poverty.
The analysis considers the threats and opportunities affecting the community's healthcare providers. The opportunities include development in healthcare technologies, funding and grants for innovative programs, and possible partnerships with community organizations. The threats include financial challenges, evolving healthcare regulations, an inadequate workforce, and the effects of such external events as natural calamities on healthcare delivery. There are various significant conclusions from the above analysis. For instance, the health issues in the context of the community are multifaceted, with different environmental factors affecting them. The inequalities in accessing healthcare services and resources and social health determinants lead to health disparities. The community's limited technological infrastructure presents significant issues in delivering and accessing healthcare services. The opportunities leverage telehealth technology and enhance community-based initiatives for social health determinants. Such threats as changes in regulation and financial challenges hinder healthcare providers' services. Health sustainability should be the core of well-being considerations (Atkinson et al., 2019).
Identification of Social Determinants of Health
The social factors impacting community health in the context of the windshield survey entail various dimensions. Socioeconomic status is fundamental in ascertaining access to opportunities and resources significantly influencing community health outcomes. Key indicators like educational attainment, income level, and employment status affect a person's capacity to make lifestyle choices, afford essential healthcare, and secure stable housing. Also, community cohesion and social support systems influence community health, considering that comp...
