Professional Development Plan
To succeed as a CNP, it will be essential to develop a professional development plan to guide my career. The plan will start with an investigation of the APN scope of guidelines in the state of Virginia, detailing the education, licensing, and regulatory requirements as well as the practice and prescription authority. Then, a personal audit of the core competencies of a CNP as dictated by the National Organization of Nurse Practitioners Faculties shall be presented. The required leadership skills for a CNP will also be identified.
Advanced Nursing Scope of Practice
Once I complete my Master, I intend to practice in the State of Virginia. Consequently, it is essential to familiarize me with the state’s nurse practice act and the scope of guidelines set for nurse practitioners in the state (Traczynski & Udalova, 2018).
Educational Requirement
To acquire a license as a nurse practitioner in Virginia, one should have completed a baccalaureate degree as a registered nurse, both in education and training. The RN education and training should be supplemented by a Master’s degree from an accredited program. The Master’s degree should comprise 2 years of coursework as well as at least 800 hours of clinical work. One should also pass their certification examination to be allowed to practice in Virginia. All education programs for nurse practitioners are supposed to be graduate-level programs.
License Requirement
To practice as a CNP in Virginia, one should hold a joint license from the Board of Medicine and the Board of Nursing. The Board of Nursing offers licenses by examination after completing graduate studies. To this end, the application for CNP licensing will require evidence that one holds a current license to practice as a registered nurse in Virginia or possesses a multi-state license as provided by the Nurse Licensure Compact (Virginia Department of Health Professions: Board of Nursing. (VDHBN), 2022a). The Board of Nursing will demand the submission of official transcripts from the graduate degree program. The total cost of licensing applications in Virginia is US$ 125, with the biennial licensure renewal at US$ 80 (VDHBN, 2022a).
In addition, one requires evidence that they have attained the professional certification to practice by recognized professional bodies. Consequently, I have to seek professional certification from either the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, the National Certification Corporation, or the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (VDHBN, 2022a). Nonetheless, the boards consider professional certification from other bodies following a recommendation from the Committee of the Joint Boards of Nursing and Medicine as long as such a body is considered a national certifying body and the awarded certification is awarded following the completion of the program and one has achieved a passing score in the program (VDHBN, 2022a).
To continue practicing in the state, I have to renew my license biennially. Notably, the boards shall send me a notification reminding me of upcoming license renewals. To receive license renewal, I have to provide evidence that I comply with competency requirements or have made efforts to continue learning (VDHBN, 2022a).
Regulatory Requirement
To practice in the state of Virginia, it will be necessary to ensure that I adhere to the regulations that guide CNPs’ practice in Virginia. In general, the state of Virginia dictates that I am not allowed to provide services as a CNP unless I have the required license from the Board of Nursing and Board and Board of Medicine. The license costs US$ 125 and is renewed every two years at US$ 80 (VDHBN, 2022a). The Board of Nursing and the Board of Medicine are the two bodies tasked with the responsibility or drafting the regulations that guide nursing practice.
Practice Authority
Once I receive my license, I will be allowed to practice in collaboration and consultation with a licensed patient care team physician as guided by a practice agreement. The practice agreement can be either written or electronic and will be reviewed and revised on a periodical basis. Notably, the license will allow me to practice based on my specialty education preparation. The practice agreement that hall guide my practice will include provisions that will allow me to periodically review patient records as entered by the team physician as well as the permission to visit the site of care delivery (VDHBN, 2022b). Second, the agreement will detail the input expected from the physician in complex cases, referral cases, as well as when one is dealing with patient emergencies. Third, the agreement shall detail the established authority for certifications, signatures, affidavits, endorsements, stamps, and certifications based on my licensed specialty and the scope of practice within the primary care team (VDHBN, 2022b). The authority is also subject to the applicable Code of Virginia and should not conflict with the established federal laws and regulations.
Notably, I shall have the responsibility of maintaining the practice agreement and should be able to avail it to the licensing boards upon request. As I intend to provide care in a health care system, I am required to make sure that the practice agreement is a constitutive element of the document that will detail my clinical privileges as well as my various duties and responsibilities as a nurse practitioner (VDHBN, 2022b).
The State allows a nurse practitioner to direct and supervise laser hair removal as long as I acquire training on skin histology and physiology, laser safety, skin type, operation of laser device, and recognition of complications and responses to complications of laser hair removal. In addition, I should participate in at least 10 proctored cases that involve patients with different skin types (VDHBN, 2022b). If I delegate the process, I will be required to ensure that the delegate has the aforementioned qualifications and I should offer direction and supervision to the delegate.
Prescriptive Authority
The Virginia Code allows nurse practitioners to prescribe Schedule II through Schedule IV controlled devices and substances. As a licensed nurse in Virginia, I will be allowed to prescribe controlled substances only if I have a provision allowing me to prescribe such substances in my practice agreement with the primary care team physician (VDHBN, 2022c). The practice agreement is required to detail the controlled substance that I shall be allowed to prescribe and may include provisions limiting my prescriptive authority. The prescription authority allowing me to prescribe various controlled substances will be required to have a signature from the patient care team physician (VDHBN, 2022c). It will be essential to observe several restrictions when prescribing ...
