Why are multiple sources of value in a writing sample? How do you vet a source prior to utilizing it to support the purpose of a document?
Writing is usually an important process in expressing the mastery and understanding of a given concept. It is the display of what one has understood, through writing. As one writes, there is the need for utilizing external sources. The aim of external sources is to ensure that the content of what is being written is as scholarly as possible. This simply means that the content needs to be up to date and therefore, the external sources play an important role. However, using external sources isn’t just the only requirement. To make the piece of writing more credible and well researched, there is the need for utilization of multiple sources. Multiple sources usually act as backup.
The use of multiple sources gives the piece of writing and the writer, more alternatives and more avenues of finding information. When information is retrieved from multiple sources, not only does it build up enough evidence about the topic under discussion, but also forearms the writer with enough information to build a more credible piece of writing. Multiple sources provide the confidence too, of writing the document.
In order to vet a source before using it as a source, its credibility needs to be checked. This is done by looking at the author of the source, the time it was done and the credentials of the author, in addition to the link. Sources that are blogs shouldn’t be considered, since they reflect a person’s own opinion rather than some researched information. Sources that were published more than ten years earlier shouldn’t be considered as well, as they are deemed outdated. The best sources to use should be scholar reviewed ones, since they have been well researched and endorsed by other scholars as well.

What strategy do you specifically use to support an idea, thesis, or purpose utilizing sources that you research or cite?
While writing, keeping an eye on the thesis statement helps in sticking to the point. There is actually little to no justification of an open mind, without the clarity of the thesis. It is important to first of all ask questions about the topic, inquire more, read and if possible, annotate the sources. This provides a clear understanding of these sources and the points that would be needed to build up the essay. Then, as the writing is done, there is the need for constant probing with respect to the thesis statement. As a result, the thesis acts as the guide, providing the framework upon which the whole essay would be based on. It is important to note that during the writing of the paper, care is taken so that there is no repetition that results in redundancy. Once there is some element of repetition, the whole document ceases being an academic paper and rather, becomes just an ordinary, informal piece of writing.
Utilizing the multiple sources selected is done through aligning the probing questions and subsequent statements with the content of the sources, though in a paraphrased manner. This indicates a deeper understanding or digestion of the information thereof. Writing entails expressing one’s personal ideas and beliefs. Utilizing multiple sources therefore, helps in justifying the central claim. They are introduced at points of agreement of disagreement with the content being written. The other strategy of utilizing these sources is when introducing factual information, such as statistics and their finds, or the findings from other pieces of research.
Finally, the other strategy used in utilizing these external sources is by offering a counterargument to the thesis claim of the work. When offering a counterargument, it is imperative that there is enough evidence and backup from multiple external sources, so as to make it more credible and hence more convincing.
