An organizational structure is how powers and responsibilities are distributed and undertaken among the organization's members (Benzer et al., 2017). Additionally, organizational structure can get defined the set of connections and roles and connections in an organization. The biggest issue in organizational structure research is what the right organization structure is. Therefore, it is important to identify controlling factors contributing to defining organizational structure. Organizational structure seeks to bring internal continuity and structural features that function well to achieve a corporate goal (Novak, 2017). However, the number of feasible configurations is restricted to what is in vogue since managers want to adopt what is fashionable, whether it is bureaucracy, participatory management, or matrix management.
Technological innovation affects organizational structure. Through technologies allowing contact at great distances and asynchronous times, employees who work together no longer need to work from the very same place. The organization is governed by parochial principles expressed in the vertical hierarchy and power distinctions between superiors and subordinates. Teamwork, learning, facial experience, and creativity are more important in today's organizations (Azar and Ciabuschi, 2017). Empowerment, equality, and consensus-building, and horizontal relationships are all qualities that have historically been associated with egalitarianism.
Although organizational theorists differentiated between organic and mechanical organizational structure, development scholars pointed out that systems can split into industrial and post-industrial modes of activity. As per innovation scholars, as organizations transition from an industrial to a post-industrial mode of 39 operations, they need a framework that includes
(1) Regulations and rules that promote learning, innovation, and autonomous work (De Vasconcelos and Irígaray,2019).
(2) Few layers in the management culture to allow quick response
(3) a high degree of horizontal integration to increase awareness.
The external climate of an entity affects its structure.
According to research, businesses structured to deal with predictable and stable markets can struggle in complex, constantly changing environments. When operating in an unpredictable environment, organizations can decentralize decision-making and flatten their hierarchies. Through an exhaustive analysis of the organizational literature, there exists a comprehensive list of structural characteristics. The three most widely discussed sub-dimensions of organizational structure are defined in greater detail:
1 The degree of horizontal integration,
2 the essence of formalization, and the
3 Centralized authority are all variables to consider.
Virtual Work Environment
A virtual work environment, also known as a virtual workplace, is a workplace that resides exclusively on the internet. It does not work in the real universe. It is maintained and built entirely on the internet. Remote workers in a virtual workplace use a range of technology-enabled tools to collaborate, communicate, and complete tasks (Asatiani et al., 2021). They might not meet physically, but they collaborate online via virtual networks and workspaces. However, a virtual workplace environment is constrained by physical zones, time zones, or resource availability because it is virtually linked.
It is easier to scale up and down project resources as required. As a result, virtual work environments provide large and small businesses the versatility they need to manage their daily needs. Virtual team members collaborate, exchange work, and organize efforts against predetermined goals using a range of telephony and collaboration resources (Dumitraşcu and Dumitraşcu, 2017). They depend on cloud-based resources to conduct voice calls, arrange face-to-face video conferences, exchange and store files and directories.
These tools are designed in a way that they stay under the control of a single administrator. Users can only be given the permissions they needed to edit, add, or change data. It ensures that records are consistent and that the data stored is secure. Unauthorized access to the data is being limited at the local level. Virtual work areas are seen as the way of the future (Meil and Kirov, 2017). With the help of the internet, it will bring together a diverse group of professionals. As a result of the increased reduced costs and efficiency, collaboration and connectivity will flourish.
Distributed Work Environment
From medicine to entertainment to education to dating, family life, and social media, technology has greatly influenced how people live. Technology takes center stage in our lives, helping us do things we never thought possible a decade ago (Franck,2021). Because of technology's capabilities and availability, we are processing and exchanging knowledge at a breakneck pace. Robotic surgery has been developed to increase surgery's accuracy and precision and the time it takes for patients to heal. As technology became more readily accessible for students to learn anywhere and at any time, the popularity of online learning has skyrocketed. We now have self-driving vehicles on our highways, and we can hold video chat sessions with everyone in the world using only our mobile phones (Franck, 2021). In other words, we live in a digital and technologically advanced era in which technology connects almost all around us, including organizations and their workers.
When it comes to when, how, and where work is done, a great change is underway. Due to several factors, such as the high cost of buildings and land in urban areas, air pollution from mass transportation, and shifts like work, the future workspace would be more geographically dispersed. Because of technological advancements, our workforce's geography has shifted significantly in the last two decades, from conventional mortar and brick buildings to fragmented work environments.
A distributed workforce goes beyond a conventional office setting from having all workers in a physical location to having employees in various physical locations worldwide (Hustad, 2017). A distributed workforce is spread over a wide region, globally or domestically. Through installing key technology, dispersed companies allow employees placed anywhere else to access all of the corporation's services and software such as data, apps, and email without operating within the boundaries of a physical business facility (Andersson, 2017).
Co-located Work Environment
Primary research from the most easily virtualized industries suggests that co-location is an essential factor in generating innovations; the same applies to public services (Lous, 2018). Co-location provides the ability to address all customer needs in one area, incorporating exemplified facilities in emergency and accident units, high-dependency units, maternity units, wireless production, desktops, and workbenches. Business fact is that it is virtually impossible to retain all workers in one place. The structure builds in flexibility, and then the next thing you know, some people can work from home whereas others are forced to enter every day. Co-location is valuable for meetings involving close listening, such as strategy discussions.
Whiteboarding designs are highly successful in person but also with online resources. Alternatively, if the production team is skilled, competent, and mature, success is not important. Communication styles vary and can be handled efficiently by learning to interact differently.
