In its broadest definition, simulation is a technique for assessing how well an existing or prospective system will work under various configurations of interest over protracted periods of real-time (Maria, n.d.). Before making changes to a current system or creating a new one, simulation is used to lower the likelihood that it will not function as expected, get rid of unexpected bottlenecks, avoid under-or overusing resources, and improve system performance (Maria, n.d.).
