An important step in making better decisions is learning about yourself and acknowledging bad decisions you have made. While you shouldn’t dwell on past mistakes, you can learn significant lessons from unsuccessful experiences. Effective leaders are not afraid to take responsibility for plans that didn’t work out and take steps to make things better.

What was the context and decision you made?
I made a poor decision relating to layoffs at an organization I worked as a human resource manager. After losing three significant customers, I decided to let go of four employees in the office. The decision was quite difficult on a personal level since I had hired the employees. I made a mistake by firing them without researching other factors that could have led to customer loss (Warrick, 2017). However, I recognized that the business circumstances had changed and that such occurrences are inevitable in a business environment. Later, I realized that I would have laid off the employees directly, clearly, and empathetic. Therefore, the affected employees could not understand the details of severance packages.
