This task analyzes the Chief Transformation Officer (CTO) position and its main tasks and competencies in organizational change. With technological, market, and cultural changes growing faster, the need for systematic and planned change has never been more significant, and this is the role of the CTO.
The Duties of a CTO
Palmer et al. (2022) point out that the CTO is not just a coordinator; the CTO is a “high-level conductor" who defines the change, disrupts the status quo, and creates passion. For a CTO to deliver their role successfully, they need to be independent and have prior experience operating in a disruptive environment. Their strategy should be supported by the organization's top management and the board. In the case of a company, when the CTO acts as an extension of the CEO, he must be able to solve problems, be emotionally intelligent, and be capable of managing top managers. These former two roles are significant in guaranteeing that different transformation processes are coordinated and effective Calloway (Palmer et al., 2022, pp. 392–393).
The Role of a CTO in Organizational Change
The CTO is the critical player in change as he can set the tone of change, spearhead change initiatives, and encourage innovation in the organization. This role is critical, especially in large or middle-range organizations, because of the structural complexity that may exist and needs coherence in the organizational form. The CTO also has the final word on how the business process must support the transformation process and can dictate whether growth programs and company objectives are aligned (Wade, 2019). Palmer et al. (2022) further explain that, to succeed, the CTO needs to address eight strategic challenges: gaining support from the CEO and the board of directors and challenging opaque or self-interested stakeholders. This clearly networked position of the CTO creates product innovations and changes organizational culture, thus providing the necessary guidelines for long-term organizational success in a changing context (pp. 392-394).
