Background
Airlines enter into strategic alliances with the aim of increasing passenger traffic, reducing costs and allowing them to increase flight frequency. Typically, the alliances consist of larger alliances with the regional hubs, and small carriers that add value to the hubs of the larger players. The three main airline alliances are Oneworld, SkyTeam and Star Alliance, which have expanded into new areas of operations as local airlines join them. This has facilitated the sharing of information and offering similar services among members of the alliances
Membership
Oneworld consist of 15 alliance members serving in more than 1,000 destinations and operating in more than 150 countries globally (Oneworld, 2015). SkyTeam has entered into an alliance with 20 partner airlines serving over 1,000 destinations across the six continents in 177 countries (Sky Name 2015). The Star alliance has 28 member airlines, with 4657 aircrafts, serving 192 countries in 1,330 airports. The alliance also has over 1,000 lounges and there are over 18,500 daily departures (Staralliance, 2015).
