COVID-19 and Pregnancies
Expectant mothers who contract COVID-19 during their pregnancy are more susceptible to experiencing severe illness in comparison to non-pregnant women. Due to the suppression of the immune system and the strain on the airways and heart during pregnancy, resistance to the novel coronavirus is compromised (Christiano, 2020). Severe COVID-19 infection during pregnancy increases the risk of preterm birth, stillbirth, preeclampsia, and cesarean section, among other significant complications. If the mother’s oxygen levels decline or if she requires intensive medical interventions such as ventilation, ECMO, or medication infusions, the baby’s life is also in jeopardy(Christiano, 2020). The developing fetus may experience compromised blood flow and oxygen due to these invasive procedures. In addition, ventilation, hospitalization, or severe maternal illness necessitate the separation of mother and child, which disrupts bonding, lactation, and neonatal care. Unfortunately, compared to non-pregnant women infected with the virus, pregnant women with COVID-19 have an increased mortality risk. They may require intensive care, particularly if they have pre-existing conditions such as obesity or diabetes.
The possibility of virus transmission to the fetus during pregnancy or delivery is an additional cause for concern. Virus transmission across the placenta is possible, but the evidence is equivocal. Although some infants born to mothers who are COVID-19-positive have tested positive, the timing of conception, transmission, or recovery of the virus remains unknown(Christiano, 2020). Inconsistent and limited evidence exists regarding the likelihood of developing birth defects or future health complications. Although vertical transmission appears improbable, its exclusion has not been definitively established. More extensive research is required to provide conclusive evidence regarding child hazards. Obtaining COVID-19 during pregnancy can result in the mother’s postpartum separation if she becomes too ill to care for the infant (Christiano, 2020). This occurrence disrupts early-life attachment and lactation, both of which are vital. In conclusion, expectant women who contract COVID-19 have every reason to be concerned about the potential dangers to their developing fetuses as well as to their health. Remaining masked, isolated, and infection-free is crucial.
