Allegories on Race and Racism as Related to Health, and Weekly Reflection #4 Student Name Institution Professor Name Course Date Allegories on Race and Racism as Related to Health, and Weekly Reflection #4 Allegories on Race and Racism as Related to Health Allegory #1: Japanese Lanterns The Japanese Lanterns allegory vividly illustrates how race is a social construct that distorts people’s perceptions. Dr. Jones describes seeing groups of differently colored moths, only to realize their colors stemmed from the colored lights illuminating them (TEDx Talks, 2014). It brilliantly depicts how the racial categories people perceive are not innate or fixed but rather interpretations created by the “colored lights” of our societies. Just as the lights filtered Dr. Jones’ view of the moth colors, the racial lenses embedded in peoples’ cultures filter how they classify and interpret human diversity (TEDx Talks, 2014). The allegory underscores that race has no biological basis - the moth colors stemmed from the arbitrary lights, not innate differences among the moths. Similarly, the racial groups humans are divided into reflect the distorting social gaze, not meaningful genetic demarcations. This allegory elegantly unmasks race as a shifting social construct, not a scientific fact. The categories created tell more about the "lights" of the societies than any biological realities. Dr. Jones encourages people to recognize how the racial classifications they take for granted have masked their shared human variability and inheritance (TEDx Talks, 2014). The allegory invites people to challenge those limited racial constructs so they may appreciate the full breadth of human potential rather than viewing humanity through distorting racist lenses. The Japanese Lanterns allegory powerfully depicts how race is a social construct that distorts our perceptions of humanity’s true diversity. I could use this allegory to teach students critical concepts about race in society. We could analyze how racial categories shape societal assumptions, even though we are all part of the same human family genetically. I would facilitate discussions to unpack students’ own racial identities and experiences. Which “colored lights” of society influence how they are categorized and perceived? How have those lights limited or distorted their understanding of themselves and others? Students could reflect on how dismantling the restrictive “lanterns” of racial categories allows our shared humanity and variability to shine through. I could use real colored cellophane sheets to replicate the experience and turn the allegory into an interactive one. After describing the views via each colored filter, students might talk about how their perceptions differ when the distorting lenses are removed. It could eloquently illustrate how society's "colored perceptions distort our impressions of race." Students might develop ideas for challenging those constrained racial stereotypes and recognizing the var...
