Review a case study from a film that depicts childhood development and consider the possible theories that could be applied to the case study.

Assignment Overview
In this course, you will have to complete four assignments, and three of them will be about how theory is used in social work practice. A solid understanding of the theoretical basis for understanding human social behavior is vital for deciding on the best approach to clients on a case-by-case basis. In all three of these assignments, you will be using a character from a movie as a foundational case study. The film you select should depict factors of childhood development. Suggested films that meet the criteria of this assignment are listed below, but you are welcome to choose another film that focuses on childhood development.

Assignment Description
In this first assignment, you are tasked with identifying a developmental theory to apply to the character or family in a movie as your foundational case study. Use the Social Work Masters Library Research GuideLinks to an external site. for guidance on finding relevant articles in the Capella library.
Be sure to read the instructions below carefully, and always review the rubric to be clear on the grading criteria.
Assignment Instructions
Review your chosen case study (that is, the movie) and identify the developmental theory that you wish to apply. Make sure you provide a brief introduction to the character you chose to analyze as a case study for the assignments in this course. Include the character's demographics and write a statement of the presenting problem, as these will frame you developmental theory identification and evaluation in this assignment.
The bullet points below correspond to grading criteria in the rubric. You may also want to read the rubric to better understand the performance levels that relate to each grading criterion. In your paper:
Integrate research-based knowledge and practice wisdom to identify key components of the chosen developmental theory.

Oskar Schell from the movie “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" portrays the characteristics of a child with a psychological development disorder. In the movie, it is revealed that the nine-year-old was tested for Asperger’s syndrome but results were not conclusive (Daldry, 2011). Nonetheless, Oskar is presented as a child with a psychological development condition characterized by social difficulties, sensory issues, and anxiety. After losing his father in the World Trade Center during 9/11, Oskar is distraught trying to find answers to the death. Examining the case of Oskar through the lens of a development theory can yield significant insights into his character and condition.
Theory of Mind
The theory of mind is the ability to infer the beliefs, thoughts, and feelings of other people in social encounters to discern behavioral responses (Byom & Mutlu, 2013). In this case, it is important to have a theory of mind since it helps one interpret other people’s behavior. As revealed by Ruhl (2023), theory of mind helps one understand that other people have unique desires, thoughts, and beliefs that are different from one's. This understanding is valuable in fostering social interaction as it helps one interpret the behavior of others. As shown by Ruhl (2023), some people with Asperger's syndrome, depression, and autism have theory of mind deficit and therefore face significant challenges in interpreting actions and perceiving social cues. In essence, a deficit in the theory of mind can explain Oskar's behaviors as portrayed in the movie.
Developmental Crises and Theory of Mind
One of the challenges Oskar experiences in the movie lies in social interaction. It is clear that Oskar does not have the social skills necessary for navigating social situations. When having a conversation with other people, Oskar is brutally blunt and devoid of the civility necessary for successful communication. When he is upset in the middle of the night, he harshly tells his mother that he wishes that she was the one who died instead of his father. When talking to the doorman, Stan, Oskar uses vulgar language. Oskar also likes being alone and admits that he finds it difficult to communicate with others. Another aspect that characterizes Oskar's behavior is his intense fascination with numbers and calculations. Oskar is also intensely fascinated with finding answers to his father’s death through the ‘message’ he left him in form of a key. The key was in an envelope written the word “Black” on it, which prompted him to find people named Black. Oskar also has sensory problems as he is often overwhelmed with bright lights and loud noises. He is also afraid of unfamiliar places, and to help calm his anxieties, he carries with himself a tambourine on his quest to find answers to his father's message.
