Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is a treatable mental condition associated with one’s inability to control their drug use (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, n.d.). A primary symptom is the continuous cravings for the substance despite efforts to stop its usage. Associated symptoms include laziness, tolerance, neglecting to eat, sudden changes in mood and behavior, hostility, memory problems, confusion, and engaging in risky behavior (Mayo Clinic, n.d.). Biological, psychological, and socio-cultural factors are associated with the onset of this disorder.
Biological causes include brain chemistry and genetics. People with a blood relative, such as a biological parent or sibling with SUD are more likely to develop the disorder (Deak & Johnson, 2021).
