• It is expected that your approach will integrate a person centered, trauma-informed, strength based, anti-racist and anti-oppressive approach.
• Refer to Module 4: Crisis Intervention; Module 6: Mental Health and Suicide Intervention/Prevention; and Module 7: Substance Use to support your answers.
• Remember this is the first time you are meeting the service user in your office. They called your agency 24-hour crisis line the evening before and got an appointment to meet with you today given the urgency of the situation.
• Your session with the service user is one hour.
• Provide comprehensive answers for full marks.

Scenario
You are a Social Service Worker employed at a Victims Services organization. Victim Services provides crisis intervention support services to victims/survivors of crime and various tragedies such as car accidents, domestic violence, homicide, and suicide. The agency offers a 24-hour crisis line and a victim crisis response service which includes a mobile rapid response program, information, referrals, emotional support (up to 6 crisis intervention counselling sessions) and de-escalation techniques, and safety planning. The services are open 24 hours a day/365 day of the year and are offered in multiple languages. The agency operates from a trauma-informed, anti-racist and anti-oppressive, client centered approach.
Carly (21 years old) called the agency crisis line last night and spoke to a crisis line counselling volunteer. She was feeling distraught after a recent devastating tragedy. Four days ago, her friend Melinda was in a car accident with another vehicle and charged with drinking and driving. The person in the other vehicle has nonlife threatening, but serious injuries.
Carly had tried to convince Melinda not to drive home after the party, as she knew she had been drinking a lot, but her friend did not listen and drove off. Melinda’s life is now destroyed. Carly has been feeling immense guilt as she feels she could have stopped this from happening.
Over the past few days Carly has been smoking Cannabis to cope with the guilt and stress. This experience has reminded her of her father’s drug problem which resulted in an accidental Opioid overdose two years ago. She feels she could have done more to help her father and prevent his death.
Carly says she feels like her father’s death and her friend’s situation could have been prevented if she had been there monitoring them both more closely. She is feeling like life is not worth living and does not think she can live without all this guilt. No one else understands what she is going through. The only thing that is helping her cope is smoking weed and isolating herself in her room, away from her roommates.
Last night, the crisis line counselling volunteer provided a listening ear and with Carly’s permission booked her an in-person crisis appointment in the office to meet with a Crisis Intervention Counsellor. Carly is booked to meet with you at 1p.m. today. The crisis line counselling volunteer entered this information into the online intake system, which you have access to and have read before meeting her.
During your meeting with Carly, you will be doing a brief assessment of her situation, exploring her feelings, coping strategies and options, developing a safety plan/contract, and setting up some next steps, including referrals.
1. Describe how you will introduce yourself, your role, your agency and what else you can say to make her feel comfortable and safe with you, when she arrives at the agency. Use the exact words you will say to her (3 marks).
2. Develop 5 key questions you can ask her during the assessment of her situation (one question for each of these issues: 1. emotional well-being; 2. coping strategies; 3. Suicide; 4. substance use; and 5. grief/loss). The questions should be sensitive, culturally inclusive and trauma informed. (5 marks)
3. Create a written safety plan agreement with her that includes her emotional safety, substance use safety, suicide safety. Consider the best practices in safety planning and key information that should be in the document. (5 marks)
4. Come up with a list of 3 de-escalation techniques to support Carly with the intense emotions she is navigating. (3 marks)
5. Suggest 1 type of practical assistance and 1 agency referral she could benefit from that relate to her situation. (2 marks)
6. Provide 2-3 sentences that shows an empathetic understanding of the trauma she has faced from a trauma-informed perspective. (2 marks)
