In Chapter 1, read the case study “UPS Competes Globally with Information Technology” on pages 23–24 of the textbook. Then, answer the questions below.
How does UPS use information systems technology to achieve its strategic goals of being more efficient and customer oriented?
What would happen if the automated package tracking system was not available?
Discuss how globalization has “flattened” the world.
In Chapter 2, read the case study “Data Changes How NFL Teams Play the Game and How Fans See It” on pages 52–53 of the textbook. The, address the prompts below.
Analyze how information systems are transforming business.
What types of systems does the NFL and its teams use?
What is the role that these systems play in improving both operations and decision-making?

Describe how new technology trends may cause ethical dilemmas.
Discuss at least one ethical, social, and political issue raised by embedded cyber connections in cars.
Discuss how big data analytics are being applied to all of the data generated by motor vehicles.
In formatting your case analysis, do not use the question-and-answer format; instead, use an essay format with subheadings. Your APA-formatted case study must be at least four pages in length (not counting the title and reference pages).
You are required to use a minimum of three peer-reviewed, academic sources that are no more than 5 years old. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; all paraphrased material must have accompanying in-text citations.

Information System Essentials
Chapter 1
How does UPS use information systems technology to achieve its strategic goals of being more efficient and customer oriented?
UPS has streamlined information sharing by using scannable bar-coded labels attached to packages. These labels contain a lot of information, including the sender’s data, the destination of the package, and the time of arrival. The labels are smart, and the information contained in each label is downloaded and transmitted to UPS computer centers, and then the same information is transmitted to distribution centers closest to the destination of a package. This is quite ingenious and helpful. Having information shared and transmitted fast helps streamline the entire process and make it more efficient.
Aside from the above, UPS also has a routing software known as the ORION that creates the most efficient delivery route for their drivers, considering elements like weather, location, and traffic. The implication of the above is that customers receive their packages promptly. Further, UPS makes it possible to track delivery information through a DIAD or a Delivery Information Acquisition Device. Every customer thus gets to receive whichever information they need or have their queries responded to aptly. Customer service is thus enhanced. It is crucial to note that customers can also track their packages and check the status of their packages at any time. This can be done through the company’s website or mobile apps for smartphone users.
Lastly, UPS works to acquire or get the best fit for customers in all instances. Aside from dealing with individual customers, UPS also works with other companies and provides the best fit for its business-to-business operations. For example, UPS worked for hand in hand with CandleScience to identify what is best described as the company’s apt location for its customers on the West Coast. The service was tailored to meet CandleScience’s needs.
What would happen if the automated package tracking system was not available?
First, packages are likely to be delivered to the wrong destinations. Some streets share names, and it is human for a driver to confuse between two streets that share a name.
Secondly, some packages could be lost. Without the automated package tracking system, there is no guarantee that all packages are delivered, and therefore, the chances are high that some packages could end up being unaccounted for.
Dissatisfied customers. How would customers schedule pickups or deliveries without the system? So, the chances are high many would become irritated by UPS’s services.
Discuss how globalization has “flattened” the world.
Globalization has made it possible for people who are thousands of miles apart to have similar experiences. The same video that is making a person smile in Japan is the same video that is trending in Brazil. Services, experiences, and goods are now easily shared, mainly because globalization.
Chapter 2
Analyze how information systems are transforming business.
Information systems are transforming businesses by making them more efficient. Today, businesses can do more than they did before through information systems. For example, a business can customize its services to meet the needs of every customer it serves. This can be done by collecting customer information, which is then used to inform the services rendered.
Communication is also enhanced because of information systems. Today, different organizational departments do not necessarily need to have different systems. Currently, employees have access to all the information they need to exercise their duties through one system.
Thirdly, decision-making has also been made a lot easier because of information systems. Information systems help in the generation of reports for use by managers and employees alike. As indicated by Neziraj and Shaqiri (2018), decision-making becomes much easier when information is easily accessible, and information systems help managers to stay informed and thus be in a position to make crucial decisions.
What types of systems does the NFL and its teams use?
One system used in the NFL and by NFL teams is radio frequency identification tags (RFID technology). These track the moves players make.
What is the role that these systems play in improving both operations and decision-making?
First, the system helps to collect data that is used to make the sport more fan-oriented. The NFL is in existence mainly because the fans are willing to pay to watch games, whether online or live. Therefore, there is a need to make the experience for the f...
