RADT 3800 Summer 2025 Name: __________________________________________________ The Cycle of Infection Step 1 Community acquired pneumonia (CAP) is one of the infectious diseases that I find interesting. In an article on Medscape, a science journal for physicians, CAP is a frequent infectious bacterial disease linked to Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis that is usually characterized by symptoms such as chest pains, cough, and fever (Tran, 2025). The article notes that advancement in diagnostic testing have revealed that CAP is also linked to viruses such as influenza and rhinovirus, among others. Of note, is that physician experience challenges in differentiating between typical and atypical CAP. The article notes that some CAP patients have unusual symptoms such as ear pains and diarrhea, especially in cases involving atypical pathogens such as flagionella (Tran, 2025). A physician diagnoses a patient through blood work, molecular tests, and chest imaging with the choice dependent on the severity of the case. It is essential to start patient on antibiotic treatment, with the dosage adjusted based on resistance patterns and patient status. The treatment is administered for around 5 to 7 days, with the period based on how the patient responds. Overall, the article notes that balancing rapid diagnosis with judicious antibiotic use will continue forming the cornerstone of effective management of CAP in patients. Reference Tran, S.
