Identification
Identify the risk.
In this case, the main risk is patient safety because the impaired provider is using substances. Erratic behavior, slurred speech, and inconsistent performance can make it difficult or impossible for healthcare workers to understand what patients need or even recognize a medical emergency, thereby increasing the potential for medical errors or patient harm.
Select the most appropriate classification of the risk.
This risk is classified most appropriately as provider impairment, a human resource-related risk in healthcare. Issues relating to staff performance can directly impact patient outcomes and organizational safety standards.
Describe the risk domain.
The clinical/patient safety risk domain. This domain concerns safe and effective care provision while avoiding unnecessary harm. Impaired providers can threaten clinical safety, eroding trust and commitment to the standards for care (Candilis et al., 2019). This framework shows how provider competency is central to patient trust and preventing adverse outcomes.
Contributing Factors
Describe four factors that contribute to the risk.
Several factors make an impaired provider in the outpatient setting a risk. The primary reason is substance abuse, which directly affects cognitive and motor functions and causes erratic behavior, compromised judgment, and increased risk of medical errors. Also considered is workplace stress and burnout, as healthcare providers may participate in high-pressure environments, which leads some to adopt unhealthy coping mechanisms, including substance use. For example, healthcare environments can lead to substance abuse among providers due to high levels of stress and burnout (Kulchar & Haddad, 2022). Furthermore, the absence of proper oversight or monitoring can escalate things further by allowing the impaired provider to practice unchecked, potentially causing further harm to patients. In addition, cultural barriers within healthcare settings, such as fear of stigma or professional repercussions, prevent colleagues from reporting their concerns. These factors create a messy environment where patient safety is at risk if these interventions take too long.
Proactive Measures
Discuss three proactive measures to reduce or prevent the risk. Provide an in-text citation from one scholarly source to support your writing.
