2. One of the factors in deciding how intensively to investigate the cause of a child’s intellectual disability is the parents’ wishes in the matter. In a small group, discuss why this is the case. What if parents are uninterested in finding out the cause?
Chapter 14 - Extension Activity Answer:
Parents, very often, could be the strongest driving force when it comes to the finding of the fundamental factors that give rise to a child’s intellectual disability. It is one of the paramount issues to deal with (Batshaw et al., 2019). It is only due to the multiple ethical, emotional, and practical grounds. When parents do not cooperate and give little importance to finding the cause of the disease, then it binds the healthcare workers with more responsibilities, and ethical issues arise.
Parental request for respect is an element of enduring autonomy and family-centered care and principles. Parents are the first-line carers, as well as decision-makers, of their children, and so their request on behalf of their kids in any medical investigation must be met with respect (Batshaw et al., 2019). Lack of transparency decreases people’s trust and confiscates the ability of caregivers and families to collaborate on an effective communication solution. The relationship between healthcare providers and parents is very valuable for communication and support.
Consequently, the process could sheer up parents who have some information on the child’s intellectual disability. The process of screening tests, being faced with potentially troubling news, and contemplating the deeper questions of the diagnosis may result in severe emotional distress in parents (Batshaw et al., 2019). Parents could undergo emotions such as feeling guilty, blaming themselves, and anxiety about their child’s future, after which they might decide to go further with the examinations. Apart from this, taking into account their emotional preparedness and offering various types of assistance (including counseling) are the principles that have to be followed in such kind of cases.
