RTI and MTSS Student Name Institution Professor Name Course Date RTI and MTSS SPE 461 Weekly Activity #8 Please answer the following questions using COMPLETE sentences in order to receive full credit. Focus on RTI and MTSS * Locate the “What is RTI?” file * Read the brief article * * Think of a student in your class or one that might be referred for SPED. * * This might be the student you chose for your Case Study assignment. * * If you were to serve as the school’s SPED Coordinator, what would be a hybrid approach to implementation that you might use for a student. * If you cannot think of a student, choose one of the Case Study examples from our e-textbook. * * Think of two examples of RTI: * RTI #1: Consider a third grader who has difficulty in reading comprehension. The 3rd grader is experiencing challenges in comprehension of written text. Even though he has reading classes regularly, the student cannot understand the main ideas, make inferences and interpret the information given in passages. The students’ reading comprehension deficiency inhibits the understanding of the texts representing different subject areas. * * RTI #2: Consider a 5th-grade student demonstrating behavioral challenges. This 5th-grade student demonstrates disruptive behaviors such as outbursts, defiance, difficulty following directions, lack of concentration, and poor peer/teacher relations. Continuous removals from the classroom lead to loss of instruction and lack of academic advancement. Such factors as academic problems, social-emotional issues, or environmental factors may fuel such behavior. A Hybrid Approach to Implementation In Tier 1, the primary goal is to provide the child with appropriate, research-based reading instruction in the general education setting. This directive should include evidence-based approaches in teaching reading comprehension like direct teaching of comprehension strategies, demonstration, guided practice, and independent applications. For the student who does not see improvement with Tier 1 instruction only, the use of Tier 2 targeted interventions is required. If students do not respond well to Tier 1 interventions only, they receive target, small-group interventions directed toward the student missing certain behavioral skills or strategies (Batshaw et al., 2019). Other solutions from BIP that are proposed are social skill training, check-in/check-out systems, or behavior contracts. Such small group interventions have supplemental explicit teaching in the reading comprehension strategies, more practice and feedback, and the student’s specific needs. Regular monitoring of progress is essential throughout the RTI process to assess the s...
