Automatic processing takes place without effort, intention, or awareness and requires few resources. In other words, it is a state of mindlessness where specific behaviors occur with minimal thought. Automatic processes arise unintentionally without conscious initiation, are efficient, occur without awareness, and are uncontrollable (Hamilton & Stroessner, 2021). They enable individuals to reserve their cognitive resources so that they can have the energy to deal with new things. For example, when individuals follow routines, they do not pay more attention to what they are doing but focus on new things that might interrupt what they are doing. The paper focuses on examples of automatic processing.
Cognitive representations refer to the beliefs, expectancies, and knowledge about a specific domain (Hamilton & Stroessner, 2021).
