Percocet versus Standard Care in Lower Back Pain Management
Lower Back Pain (LBP) is a chronic and multifactorial musculoskeletal ailment affecting a bulk of the global population which in turn leads to a huge bill on the health care system and significant decline in affected population health outcomes. As common as backaches is and the damage it can cause, handling LBP fiercely is very important. Pharmacological treatment of LBP is frequently a key part of the management approach, and Percocet (oxycodone-acetaminophen compound) tends to be among the drugs doctors prescribe more often because of its powerful analgesic properties (Dowell et al., 2022; Groenewald et al., 2022; Jauregui et al., 2020). The comparison between the outcomes of taking Percocet and the standard care treatments for LBP symptoms in terms of effectiveness is still a matter of contention among medical professionals today.
This controversy shows the necessity to consider the existing literature critically and comprehensively while studying how effective the Percocet is in LBP management. This type of study is vital because it provides a basis for evidence-based clinical decision-making and a means of improving patient outcomes. Consequently, the central inquiry guiding this review is articulated as follows: In the situation when people struggle with lower back pain (P), are Percocet (I) superior to standard care options (C) in terms of pain reduction as well as improvement in the functional outcomes (O)?
This PICOT question constitutes the focal point of this review, which guides the process of research and evidence synthesis to determine the comparative effectiveness of Percocet versus general care interventions for Low Back Pain’s multifaceted and complicated challenges. Through a careful reading of a select group of relevant literature, this review is supposed to help healthcare providers come up with the best way of medically dealing with the individuals who are suffering from lower back pain so that the clinical decisions made are more informed and patient oriented.
Search Strategy
A systematic and comprehensive strategy was developed to find appropriate literature from renowned scholarly databases, comprising of PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar. The search was carried out based on a set of keywords selected with care to help to reach the studies, which were related to the research being conducted. The search terms were “lower back pain”, “Percocet”, “oxycodone”, and “standard care.” Moreover, this screening needed to be directed to recent researches only, and to use the most current evidence, so filters were applied to choose only the articles published from 2020 onward.
In addition, the literature chosen must be of high quality and relevance; therefore, only studies written in the English language were required. This standard ensured an objective collection of a sufficient number of studies while using the same language conventions for analysis and synthesis to promote uniformity.
Evidence
Low back pain (LBP) comparative studies give different results in which some show benefits of using Percocet while others show no benefits at all or adverse effects associated with using it. Certain analyses show Percocet might be better than traditional treatment, whereas other ones show no significant difference or possible disadvantages of Percocet administration.
The study of Chabon et al. (2024), from 2007 to 2018, showed that there was a significant decline in the administration of oxycodone for back-related pain in the Emergency Departments (EDs), dropping by as much 62.3%. Although the current state has shown the decline in the contribution of opioid-based analgesics for lower back pain in some demographic groups in particular, a growing number of patients still receive such pain-controlling medications during this period. The demographic of patients aged 45 and up, more female patients, black females, and the Hispanic or Latino group experienced a rise in prescriptions as well. In general, the number of the analgesics containing oxycodone has diminished during the check period; but there is a conspicuous growth for its prescription among some certain demographic groups and the use of oxycodone has been rising as well.
Furthermore, Juaregui et al. (2020) point to a problematic tendency of opioid-prescribing utilization in an acute low back pain emergency department environment of a rural healthca...
