What Is The Impact Of Technology In The American Workforce?
* Paragraph One
Introduction
Hook: At the beginning of the industrial revolution era, people had varied perspectives about the impact that such changes would have on society. Today, the industrial revolution is one of the factors that have played a major role in economic growth. The case of technology also presents similar sentiments where some people consider it harmful to the workforce while others consider it helpful.
Problem Identification: The problems about technological advancements in the American workforce are evident in the labor market due to the possibilities of people losing jobs to automation, lack of skills to handle IT-related jobs, and overreliance on technology which reduces productivity. Technology has also facilitated innovations that create new jobs opportunities that require advanced IT-related skills. Therefore, the impact of technology on the American workforce remains diverse. Given that technology will keep on advancing, its impact on the workforce will also continue to change.
Thesis Statement: Technology has created problems in the American workforce such as the replacement of workers by machines, changing the skills needed by people to secure certain jobs, and reducing productivity due to the overreliance on technology
* Paragraph Two
Topic Sentence: Technology is has resulted in a substantial amount of job loss as some of the job tasks no longer need manpower but are rather carried out by machines.
Evidence: An approximation of 400000 jobs in the American industry was lost to automation from the year 1990 to 2007 (McClure, 2018). Since then, technology has advanced at a very high rate and therefore, more jobs continue to be lost to technology.
Analysis: Various innovations have led to the development of automation systems that are more effective in carrying out certain tasks than human beings. Many companies prefer to use automation systems because they are more efficient and play a substantial role in profit maximization. When such tasks are performed by human beings, they tend to cost the companies more and take a long period to complete. Therefore, the profits made would be less than the profits made through task automation.
Qualifier: Such is not always the case because some of the automation systems are costly to implement and maintain. In such a case, it would be less costly to use such technologies than hiring human beings.
Summative Sentence: The overall impact of technological advancements on the American workforce is that it eliminates jobs through task automation. Such requires people to develop skills regarding the digital world to remain relevant in the job market.
* Paragraph Three
Topic Sentence: Technology has changed the skills needed by people to secure the best jobs in the market and this requires people to take more courses to secure jobs.
Evidence: In 2020, the Us Bureau of Labor Statistics pointed out that approximately 77% of the jobs in the US require some level of computer knowledge (Arntz, Gregory & Zierahn, 2020). This means that people without any computer knowledge are not eligible for such jobs. Approximately one in every three workers in the US lacks sufficient computer knowledge to apply in most of the jobs that require computer skills. Therefore, these individuals have to work their level best into securing the 23% of the totals jobs that do not require computer knowledge.
Analysis: The workers that do not have computer skills are too many to secure the available jobs. Hence, this has created a gap in terms of unemployment where people remain unemployed because their skills do not match the employer’s requirements. Such people have an option of staying unemployed or taking short computer courses to develop relevant skills in the job market. Taking short computer courses might be time-consuming and will also require money. Taking such causes is not a guarantee that an individual would secure high-paying jobs in the market. The highest-paying jobs require an individual to have a lot of computer skills which can be obtained by pursuing further education in IT-related courses.
Qualifier: The job market is uncertain, and gaining computer skills is not a guarantee that an individual would secure their dream job. The same person has chances of securing a well-paying job that does not require computer skills and securing a job that does not require computer skills.
