Costco Wholesale
Costco is a membership warehouse club, and its foremost objective is to make the shopping experience of its members enjoyable. The company achieves this by providing its members with the best prices for a wide variety of merchandise. In addition, it provides them with convenient specialty departments and exclusive member services (Costco, n.d.). The company was founded in 1976 under the name of Price Club in San Diego and served only small businesses. Later the company extended its services to a selected audience of non-business members. It has grown remarkably, expanding its services to several other countries. Its philosophy is to keep prices down and pass the savings to its members. In addition, the company has a motivated staff whose common goal is to exceed members' expectations. Similarly, the company has a reputation for being employee-focused by offering better wages and benefits. It has an attractive culture that appeals to positive and talented employees.
Part 1: Individual Processes and Behavior
In any organization, the leadership must endeavor to understand the individual differences of their employees to consolidate the working relationship. Leaders must understand that individuals have unique skills, abilities, personalities, and perceptions, among other attributes (Nelson & Quick, 2019). These attributes prompt employees to behave in different ways. By understanding so, leaders can create an environment that suits all employees.
Costco understands that personality, perception, and attribution are principal attributes that shape employees’ behavior in organizations. It acknowledges that understanding the personality of employees is crucial to managers because it enables them to have a better understanding and relationship with them. As such, it has undertaken to embrace diversity and inclusion to accommodate employees with all kinds of personalities (Costco, 2022-a). Similarly, perception is another individual difference that defines employees' behaviors. It refers to how individuals perceive themselves and the world around them. Several factors determine the perception of individuals. They include characteristics of the perceiver, characteristics of the person being perceived, and characteristics of the situation in which the two entities interact. In this regard, Costco has created an environment that enhances perception from all perspectives. For instance, it perceives its employees as human capital and does every effort to improve their satisfaction. Perception is crucial as it significantly influences decision-making (Lima & Canbarro, 2015). On the other hand, perception encounters barriers such as stereotypes and selective perceptions. Further, attribution also influences the behavior of individuals in different dimensions. For instance, when employees fail to achieve the desired goal, they may attribute that failure to the lack of applying enough effort. Others may attribute their lack of success to the working environment. Managers of an organization can tell whether employees are motivated by evaluating their attributions. Concerning the three attributes, Costco has a code of ethics that outlines the company’s commitment to taking care of the employees (Costco, 2022-a). The policies guarantee an environment that is inclusive and respectful to all employees and devoid of any form of discrimination. The company also acknowledges that embracing individual differences is instrumental in its growth as it results in opportunities and employee satisfaction. Last but not least, Costco has an open-door policy that encourages its employees to voice their concerns without fear of victimization or discrimination.
The other attributes that determine how employees behave are attitudes, emotions, and ethics. Attitude refers to how individuals evaluate different events; it revolves around whether they find those events favorable or unfavorable. Employees' attitudes depend on motivation, feedback, and management (Nelson & Quick, 2019). Emotions, on the other hand, refer to intense, short-lived reactions to events and impact employees’ attitudes and behaviors. Finally, ethics refers to how individuals behave to conform to their values and those of the organization. This set of attributes has a direct effect on performance. In cognizance of this, Costco has a code of ethics that ensures the promotion of the well-being of employees. The company realizes that caring for employees inevitably leads to shared responsibility and robust relationships (PoškienΔ— et al., 2020). The company also embraces an atmosphere of openness that allows all employees to discuss any issue with all levels of management (Costco, 2022-a). It also continuously provides feedback to its employees. This bolsters the positive attitudes of employees and improves their emotions. In addition, the company has attractive packages that enhance employee motivation. For instance, the company provides affordable healthcare coverage for all employees. In a word, the company encourages employees to take the company as a place where they can advance their careers.
Further, Costco prioritizes awareness, training, and education of its employees. In this regard, it is committed to overseeing additional training of managers on race, bias, and equity. In addition, the company supports management to enhance their engagement in inclusive conversations by providing educational resources.
Part 2: Interpersonal Processes and Behavior
Interpersonal relationships in organizations refer to how employees interact with their colleagues. Conventionally, the process exclusively involves communication and plays a central role in promoting good health and well-being in employees (Nelson & Quick, 2019). Communication is also essential as it allows the exchange of ideas, enables employees to understand organizational expectations, and allows employees to express themselves. Costco understands that interpersonal communication forms the foundation for the efficacious performance and well-being of employees. As such, the company has adopted effective communication policies that pave the way for any employee to discuss any matter with any level of management. This approach has considerably scaled up the engagement of employees, which leads to employees taking part in the ownership of the company (Costa & Loureiro, 2019). The company has also formulated effective communication systems that allow employees to report an actual or suspected violation of law or code of ethics. The systems embrace open and confidential communication.
Any organization that hopes to remain competitive in the ever-evolving market environment must nurture and promote teamwork. Teamwork plays a significant role in helping organizations accomplish their objectives. This is because team members complement their skills, which smoothens problem-saving and decision-making. In a word, teamwork helps overcome individual limitations, thereby enhancing output. In Costco, different teams endeavor to achieve the organization's objective of exceeding members' expectations. One such team is the Merchandis...
