As part of the water supply infrastructure, the St. Francis Dam was elected in the San Francisquito Canyon in the year 1924 and was completed in the year 1926. Almost two years later the dam became one of the largest catastrophes in construction and civil engineering in the 20th century. It was on 12th march of 1928, that the dam finally gave in and broke down, releasing close to 13 billion gallons of water into the canyon below. This lead to a loss of life estimated at 400 persons and more than $7 million dollars in damages to property downstream (Nichols, 2002).
