Religion in China and the US
Culture is arguably the most important aspect of an individual’s social life, considering its impacts on personality development. People rely on culture to differentiate good from bad deeds. It is mainly through a culture that individuals interact, empathize, and assist one another. Culture also defines important human prospects, including political and economic activities. Understanding cultural differences is akin to developing insight into why different cultural regions are structured differently. Presently, the US and China are among the most dominant cultures in the world. Considering how the two nations differ in socio-political ideologies, exploring the influence of cultural prospects in the variations is insightful. This paper assesses cultural differences between China and the US through an analysis of their respective religions. China differs from the US in religious prospects, including structure, philosophy, and influence in political decisions, which extend to define some of the fundamental differences between the US and China.
Religion and in Modern Societies
There is no scholarly agreement on what constitutes a religion. However, religion is a factor of sociocultural systems related to humanity’s spiritual, transcendental, and supernatural elements. Among humans, religious beliefs constitute prospects that they consider worthy of special reverence, divine, spiritual, absolute, sacred, and holy (Bergsman, 2013). Religion is also linked with people’s management of the ultimate concerns of their fates after death. Most religious doctrines define beliefs in life after death as a matter of the relationship between the individual and the spirits or gods. Religious beliefs are consistently linked to investments in spiritual and moral authorities. Believers in various religious groups partake in prospects, including performing rituals, meditation, and prayer to showcase their commitment to the beliefs. Approximately 84% of the world’s population is affiliated with some religious groups. There are about 10,000 distinct religions globally, with folk religions, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity shown as the most dominant religious groups. There is a notable increase in religiously unaffiliated people to about 16% of the population. However, religiously unaffiliated individuals still showcase some beliefs, especially in the prospects of life after death.
Religions and religious groups are important to societies in various ways. In most cultures, religion is a factor of identity. Religious groups are large social gatherings in which people manifest similar characteristics. In such groups, people find meaning for different aspects of their lives, including their reason for existent. Religion is also a tool that defines behavior (Bergsman, 2013). Prospects such as moral or ethical behaviors are largely linked to the teachings of various religious groups. Without religious beliefs, most societies can be rendered lacking in what is right or what is wrong. Religion is also important when it comes to human health and wellness. Religious groups connect the wellness of believers with specific behaviors or closeness to the gods or spirits. People use their relationships with powerful beings to define courses of their health and wellness challenges. Ultimately, religion is a powerful tool in political processes. Religious activities traditionally were influenced by or influenced political activities. Highly religious nations resort to their teachings to define political decisions (Rogers & Konieczny, 2018). With their large persuasions, religions are also used in modern democracies to influence political debates in ways that are deemed fit. The value that people attach to various religious groups defines the differences in religion within the US and China.
Chinese Religion
China is the most populated nation globally, with religious beliefs that have attracted debates in the past. The Chinese people find it challenging to name their religion with certainty as it constitutes a mixture of Daoism, Confucianism, Buddhism, and traditional religion. Philosophies and religious beliefs affect the Chinese people’s aspects, including their social structure, arts, science, and government (Wang & Jang, 2018). Religion in China draws mainly from the teachings of the three pillars, including Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. The teachings and beliefs from the three pillars have been at loggerheads even though they have found room for overlap in recent history. Remarkably, instead of one religious tradition staying dominant while eliminating the others, the Chinese religious groups have stayed alongside each other, changed, and influenced each other. Understanding the unique interplay in the different religious traditions within Chin should accord an individual an insight into the Chinese religion both in modern times and traditionally.
Confucianism is among China’s most renowned religious groups with a significant persuasion on people’s cultural beliefs. Often, people link Confucianism to philosophy and politics more than they consider it a true religion. Confucianism is a way of life for the traditional Chinese. It still influences the lives of present Chinese individuals. The founder of Confucianism was a renowned political figure and a philosopher who lived between 551 and 479 BCE (Wang & Jang, 2018). During the time of its emergence, the Chinese principles had begun to deteriorate within competing political states. The Confucianism believers took older religious teachings and transformed them into the guiding principles of Chinese society (Kwok, 2019). The new teachings would define the nation on the basic aspects of how people should be governed, educational standards of the Chinese people, interactions between family members and the public sphere, and guidance on all levels of ancient Chinese. Confucianism encouraged the dependency between people and entities, with its teachings accommodating the rituals to enhance it. Confucianism also taught that every person had a role to play in strengthening the nation’s political ideals. The principle teaching was that if every person fulfilled their roles with kindness and respect to others, the state would find stronger grounds to base its growth. It is worth remarking that Confucius’ teachings did not delve into the teachings of mysticism, gods and goddesses, and the afterlife. For such a reason, Confucianism is highly regarded as a tool to correct political leadership and enhance the philosophical ideals of the traditional Chinese culture.
The second influential religious group in China is Taoism/Daoism. Taoism was adopted around 2000 years ago and is a much younger religious group if compared to Confucianism. As opposed to Confucianism that is highly political and philosophical, Taoism emphasizes the teachings of spiritual elements of life. In the Taoist structure, humans are supposed to yield to the teachings of Tao. In an attempt to keep with the needs of Taoism, humans are instructed to engage only the natural world (Wang & Jang, 2018). Taoism is known for the concept of Wu-Wei, which loosely translates to no action. Wu-Wei, however, implies going with the true ways of the world and limiting their strive for hard desires. Taoists view aspects such as society, government...
