One type of counterargument is feasibility. This involves whether the solution you propose can actually be put into practice in real life, and why or why not. Often, feasibility has to do with limited resources: you may prove without a doubt that a new parking garage will solve the student parking problem, but who is going to pay for it? Also, where could we put it? A good proposal will consider these practical problems, and offer solutions. Other feasibility concerns include the points of view of various people and groups; is it really practical to think that So-and-So will be willing to make that sacrifice or change their minds? Again, propose a solution: what will make it worth their while? Basically, ask yourself, “what is going to keep this from actually happening, and what is my solution for that?”



Peroratio (Conclusion)



One effective way to put your topic in a new perspective at the end is to conclude your essay with a call to action: Tell your classmates in our ENGL 121 class exactly what you want them to do and how to do it now that they have read your essay and have been convinced that you are correct. The best peroratio paragraphs will give specific steps to take. For example, you might refer readers to an organization that is working to solve the problem or address the issue, and explain exactly what the organization does, how it does it, and what your readers can do to support this organization or what the organization is trying to do. Introduction
Date labeling on consumer goods especially food is a major cause of household waste which is a global catastrophe with millions of tons going to waste each year. U.K households lose up to 7.3 million tons of food whose value is about £13 billion thrown away as waste and this is mainly attributed to product date labeling (Smithers, 2019). The United States spends 1.3% of its GDP on food production, food transport and disposal of food that is not consumed because it is considered expired. Ironically in every six Americans, one is food insecure which is a social problem (2018 U.S. Food Waste Investment Report). Food wastage is prevalent along the supply chain and bears a direct impact on the quality and safety of food, and the environment due to food waste disposal. Among the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations member states in September 2015 (SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT), food wastage is listed among the priorities requiring responsible consumption and production.
Implementing strategies whose objective is to guide the use of date labeling with a view to adoption of the best practices will reduce food waste. These strategies should focus on reducing food waste and removing the barriers to distribution and consumer awareness creation in terms of what the label means, the why a product must have a label, the quality and safety of using the products, their storage parameters and the responsibilities of each channel of distribution.
Audiences that must be integrated into this discussion include grocery and hospitality businesses, redistribution organizations, enforcement agencies and consumer groups through awareness campaigns. Coupled with the guiding principles, behavioral change among household product consumers, the technical specifications of food product contents and packaging will enable consumers make informed decisions on the most appropriate amounts of food to buy that will last them for a specific duration.
International Food Date Labeling Frameworks.
The European Union parliament in 2014 set regulations to guide a commodities minimum durability dates which require that highly perishable products like food are likely to cause an immediate danger to human health and therefore must adhere to date labeling guidelines in accordance with Article 14(2) to (5) of the EU regulations (Regulation (EC) No 178/2002). Additionally, storage conditions must be as indicated in those guidelines The USA situation is complicated by a mix of regulatory jurisdictions which hold varied perspectives on food date labeling. Open labeling of food products is allowed in Arabic countries, South America and the European Free Trade Association members with an exception of a few countries whose regulatory frameworks outline specific provisions (Canali et al., p 37). In Australia and New Zealand, the food standards code prescribe specific wording in a precise format for date labeling accompanied with a statement on the products storage conditions. Canada’s food and drug regulations require all packaged foods to have a durable life of 90 days or less with clear instructions of their storage conditions (Yngfalk p.277).. The four Nordic countries of Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland use guidelines for both general and nutritional labeling provided for under the FIC regulations of 2014.
Consumer Perceptions on Food Date Labels
Consumer perceptions about date labels on food are of great importance because of the dangers that are posed by unhealthy food consumption which may lead to ailments or even death. Unhealthy diets such as those that constitute high saturations of fat and calories with low vegetable and fruit content accounts for almost one third of heart related diseases as well as cancer. Labels for both dates and nutrition on food products are a key driver for consumer decisions on purchase of food products (Grunert p.179). Quite often consumers confuse the difference between food date labels and nutrition labels.
Consumer product labeling became popular in the 1970s and its aim was to ensure freshness of food products and help consumers to make safe use of the food products with minimal waste. Date labels are currently regulated. Information on food packaging and the way in which it is applied by manufacturers and distributors causes consumer confusion because due to misrepresentation of date labels on products consumers end up wasting a lot of food (Leib et al., p. 4). Furthermore, the nature and use of date labels informs measures which can help to reduce the amount of food wasted at early stages of the supply chain for up to 30 %. Estimates on the amount of food waste occasioned by date labeling are supposed to be continuously reviewed as a strategy to create more food sustainability in the supply chain as well as resource utilization. In conducting the review, several contributing factors must be considered including an understanding of the practices of the food business operators and the authorities charged with food date labeling and the assessment of the impact of these practices on food waste.
Studies into consumer attitudes towards food labels indicate that approximately 12% of consumers have no idea or do not read food labels, 25% always read food labels on purchase while the other percentage reads them rarely. A large percentage of consumers prefer to look at the nutrient information on food products while a lesser constituency bother looking at the date label. This trend is most likely informed by the fact that many health hazards are caused by consuming unhealthy food hence for many people in Europe information on GMO, pesticides food safety, origin of food and its sell by date comes first (Franco-Arellano et al., p.411). In order to interpret the food label properly, a consumer must be able to decode the information on it which constitutes a date by which the product must not be used, and the quantitative ingredient declaration (QUID).
There are many reasons attributed to different consumer habits with regard to food date labels and some of the reasons why most consumers do not food labels important include brand loyalty, use of technical terms on the labels, too much information on the label and lack of time to read through it ( Leib et al., p.6), however there are others who find it a necessary source of product information and a large percentage do it as part of a healthy lifestyle, others want to check out the nutrients in the food, others could be checking their weight and are looking for the right food products, while others still are concerned about their children’s diet. Interestingly a huge population of consumers who read labels is keen on the health benefits of the food.
The quality, safety of food, its shelf life and date label are determined by some factors.
