1.0 Introduction
Lutry municipality can become independent from the city of Lausanne, where it buys electricity. This is through the development of alternative renewable energies. The municipality would be able to be independent in terms of energy generation through exploring the renewable energy options, by capitalizing on the sufficient natural resources that it has. Lutry municipality would sufficiently be able to supply its own energy to satisfy the energy demands by its population. This project will see t0o it that Lutry is able to produce its own renewable energies, by exploring the available energy generation opportunities that it has been presented with. In this light, the success of the municipality in generating sufficient energy for use by the people is dependent on the diversity of the energy options that it would explore (Wengenmayr, 2011).
In this regard, this project embarks on exploring the possibilities of exploiting the potential of Lutry municipality in the city of Lausanne. This project looks forward t see to it that the municipality is able to explore its own energy resources, and developing renewable energies that would satisfy its demand. The objective of this project is to make Lutry be independent from the city of Lausanne, by producing its own energy. The development of renewable energies in the municipality of Lausanne will make the municipality independent, in the sense that it will no longer dependent on Lausanne for energy.
Geography of Lutry
Lutry as at 2009 covered an estimated area of 8.45 square kilometers. Of this space, 43.4% has been employed for agricultural purposes; 20% is forested, and the rest of the land is used for settlements. Either rivers or lakes covers an estimated 0.6% of the land, while 0.1% is considered as an unproductive land. Of the area of settlements, buildings have covered 20.9%, with transportation infrastructure covering an estimated 11.4%. In addition, parks, and sports fields covers 2.4% of the settled land.
Demographics
Lutry municipality as at the end of 2011 had an estimated population of 9,305. Most of the dwellers of the municipality are local residents. However, the municipality’s 23.5% of the population are resident foreign nationals. The demographics of the population have significantly changed from the year 1999-2009. The change in population in the municipality has changed at a rate of 14.4% due to different reasons, including migrations, as well as, births and deaths.
2.0 Introduction on the site: Lutry
Lutry municipality as mentioned in one of the municipalities of Lausanne city. This project has focused on this site, because of its great potential to develop its own renewable energies. In this light, the project will fix the renewable energy generation plants on various parts of the municipality depending on the resources available, and convenience. This site significantly needs the renewable energy, which can be sustained for many reasons. The most important reason is addressing the energy needs of the population that has settled in the municipality. The municipality acts as a residence for an estimated 9,305.

Fig. Lutry
In addition to this population, Lutry is home to an estimated 2,986 businesses with most of them registered at the Chamber of Commerce. The implication of the existence of these businesses is that Lutry would need sufficient energy resources if it has to be fully independent. The renewable energy to be generated would be channeled to the households, as well as, for business purposes. The businesses, as well as, the household consumers of energy would need consistency and reliability in the supply of energy. This would mean that Lutry would have to explore diverse sources of renewable energy opportunities that it has.
As at now, it is impossible to get the exact number of households in Lutry; however, it is estimated that Lutry has about 1,000 houses, and about 3,000 apartments. This means that for Lutry to stop buying its electricity from the city of Lausanne; there is need for the municipality to develop sufficient energy outputs that would exceed the current demand. The reliability and sufficiency of energy generation are critical to addressing the needs of the households, as well as, energy used for industrial purposes. In this case, the development of renewable energies, including biomass, wind, hydraulic, and natural gas power is critical.
3.0 Map of the Lutry area
Lutry area covers a significant part of Lausanne city as evidenced below.

Lutry
The entire area on the map of Lutry hosts an estimated 9,305 residents of the municipality. The population demographics have played a critical role in influencing the electricity energy needs in Lutry. In this regard, the population uses a significant amount of electric power for various purposes.
The changing population statistics has been responsible for the changing energy demands in Lutry. In this light, understanding the changing demographics of the population would reflect the changing demand of energy in Lutry. In this sense, the population in Lutry as at 2009 was characterized by 9.7% of the population being children of age 0-9, 11.8% being teenagers of age 10-19 years, while the rest was an adult population. Lutry is said to have had an average occupancy per living room of 0.55, with over 45.6% of the total households being owner occupied. By the year 2000, Lutry has over3, 964 apartments. All these reflect the high-energy needs that Lutry had on the power that it had to buy from Lausanne.
4.0 Electricity consumption by consumers
As mentioned, Lutry consumers depend on the energy supply from Lausanne City. A large fraction of the electricity energy in Lausanne city comes from the national grid line. In this light, the consumers of electricity in Lausanne depended on the national grid systems of Switzerland. In the last couple of years, the electric consumption of power in Switzerland has tremendously changed. An upward scale of power consumption has been recorded with the 2009 figure hitting 62,114,000,000 KWh. Out of this; Lutry municipality needs 53700 kWh every year. In order to make Lutry independent of Lausanne city in terms of power generation, the city has to produce its own 53700 kWh.
Over the years, most of the consumers of power in Lutry harness their power from the PV installations, which is built on the roofs of the houses and apartments in the municipality. In addition, the consumers of high voltages of power, especially the owners of commercial buildings consume their power through larger installations (> 50 kW), which are commonly mounted on the rooftops of the apartments. In most of the single-family homes in Lutry, PV installations of an estimated kW) are connected on the roofs of these houses. 5.0 Energy Sources
5.1. Photovoltaic Power Generating Plant
I would locate the photovoltaic (PV) power generating plant in Lutry next to the shores of Lake Geneva. The watts are produced with 1sqm of PV in Lutry is estimated to be 3.5kWp. I intend to generate 5,900 kWp, which means that an average of 100 Sqm of land will be used. This plant will contain several solar panels, which will form the solar panel electricity system that will generate the energy to Lutry. The solar panel electricity system to be put up in Lutry will employ the use of photovoltaic cells that will enable the system to capture suns energy. This system has an added advantage, for they will not only work on days with direct sunlight; instead, they would be able to generate some power even on cloudy days. The people in Lutry would use the energy that would be generated from the proposed Lutry photovoltaic (PV) power generating plant for lighting and other domestic and business appliances (Hough, 2007).
This design of the photovoltaic (PV) power generating plant at Lutry would have a number of benefits for the people of Lutry. First, the residents of Lutry would be guaranteed to have energy at all seasons. In the near future, the number of photovoltaic cells would be may be increased to boost supply beyond the demands of the Lutry residents. This means that Lutry municipal may have the opportunity to sell the surplus to the grid. In addition, this form of energy will allow the residents of Lutry to cut down on their carbon footprint significantly.
The photovoltaic (PV) power generating plant in Lutry will contain a number of PV cells. To increase the efficiency of the PV cells, I would use silicon as the material forming the layers of the cells. This is because silicon is a sensitive semi-conductor that would allow the cells to create an electric field upon being hit by an electric field. Lutry receives significant amounts of sunlight. This sunlight would be harnessed by the cells mounted on modules, which will be put on one central location forming the PV power generating plant.
In addition, this plan will also involve a number of buildings around the region. The owners of the selected buildings would be approached, and facilitated to replace their normal roof tiles, with the solar tiles. The sunlight energy that would be harnessed would be converted to electric energy and redirected to the solar grid before being channeled to the different consumers in Lutry. This approach will be useful for it would allow the plant to cover a limited amount of space, as well as, allow the residents of Lutry to take part in the generation of photovoltaic electric energy.
The cost of putting up the photovoltaic (PV) power generating plant in Lutry plant may translate to the tune of $760,000 with each of the solar PV system that make the plant costing an estimated £7,000. This cost will allow the plant to have high quality solar panels, and accessories that would be used in the plant. It will also allow for other initial costs of labor, and materials to be catered. In the end, the Lutry photovoltaic (PV) power generating plant will get to be less costly with the increase in the capacity of electricity that would be generated.
This plant will have sufficient amounts of output per annum. In this regard, the each of the 3.5kWp system of the plant would generate an estimated 5,900 kilowatt-hours of electricity every year. This will add to the other energy sources that will be explored in the Lutry, making Lutry be self sufficient and independent vis-à-vis satisfying its own energy demands.
In addition, the Lutry photovoltaic (PV) power generating plant will have a great deal of benefit in terms of maintenance. In this regard, the entire plant will demand little maintenance. The most important aspect that will be checked is to ensure that the panels making the system are cleaned, and well exposed to sunlight. In order to ensure this is done at less costs and more convenience, I will tilt all the panels making the system at 15°. This will make the panels to be cleaned by rainfall, and enable them to capture sunlight much easily. The panels in the photovoltaic (PV) power generating plant will last for a long period exceeding 25 years making this source of energy favorable and convenient cost wise (Mahaney, 2007).
On overall, this plant will be able to generate will be able to generate an estimated total of 3,000,000 kilowatt hours of electricity every year. The plant will cost an estimated £7,600,000, with little costs of maintenance. This will significantly boost the energy supply of the residents of Lutry municipality.
5.2 Natural Gas Power Plant
The design of the natural gas power plant that will be made in Lutry will be a simple one. I look forward to develop a natural gas power plant that will provide 2,000-kilowatt hours of electricity every year for the people of Lutry. In this light, the plant should be able to produce a significant amount of electricity every month. In order to meet this objective, I would put up a simple but effective natural gas power plant in Lutry.
The design of the natural gas power plant that will be put up in Lutry will be as follows.

The target of this plant will be to produce LNG (liquefied natural gas), which would be stored in containers, and distributed to the vicinity of the consumers in Lutry. In this regard, the plant will play a significant role in supplying energy that will be used by the residents of Lutry for various functions. The energy from the plant, which would be distributed in form of LNG (liquefied natural gas), stored in the gas tanks will be used for various purposes including cooking, and warming water, and other uses.
The natural-gas processing plant at Lutry will process raw natural gas as explained in the diagram above. The raw natural gas would be processed from non-associated gas wells and pipelined to the end user markets. The process of processing the raw gas will involve pumping the gas into a gas processing plant, where the purification process will take place. In this regard, the initial purification will involve the removal of acid gases, which include carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide. In this regard, the amine treating method will be employed to separate the carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide from the stream of natural gas.
The next step in the plant is to remove water vapor that is in the gas. This is done by a process commonly referred to as HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glycol_dehydration" \o "Glycol dehydration"glycol dehydration, and by the use of deliquescent chloride desiccants. This is followed by the removal of mercury by the adsorption processes. Nitrogen may also be removed by the absorption process, which uses lean oil as the absorbent. After this is done, the next process that would follow is to recover natural gas liquids (Chandra, 2006).
The process of recovering natural gas liquids is done by the use of cryogenic low temperature distillation process. This process encompasses the expansion of the gas by taking the gas through a HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turbo-expander" \o "Turbo-expander"turbo-expander. This process is followed by distillation, which is conducted in the HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fractionating_column" \o "Fractionating column"fractionating column, which demethanizes the gas. The residue gas that will be produced will be the final gas that will be pipelined to the consumers in Lutry. However, this gas would be sweetened through the Merox processing unit. The natural gas would then be liquefied and stored in different sizes of gas cylinders, for use in providing heat energy used for many processes, including cooking (Chandra, 2006).
This energy (natural gas energy) will be transported physically to the destination markets around Lutry for sale. This form of energy will be very useful for the residents of Lutry, because it would significantly boost the convenience of accessing energy for domestic and other purposes. The estimated 1000 families that live in Lutry municipality will easily access natural gas energy from their nearby retail centre. This form of energy would also lower the dependency of the residents in the city on other energy sources, especially the energy from the main grid line.
Due to the high costs of setting up a single natural gas processing plant, I would only set up one plant, but maximize on its use by creating a 24/7 operating schedule. The workers at the plant will be working in shifts with some working during the day, as others work at night. These will d...
