Success of every institution is highly determined by how the staffs relate to each other while doing their day to day activities at the place of work. The query on why some teams succeed while other fail can only be answered by knowing the merits and demerits brought across by team work. This paper seeks to look at the advantages and disadvantages of a team work.
The term teamwork has become well known around the business world, but the actual meaning of the word "teamwork`, diverges form one business to the other or even from one individual to the other. It has been noted that the difficulty in defining the term (teamwork) twigs from the fact that the team actually consists of several facets, making it have variety of definition. Though not everyplace that requires teamwork, research shows that the merits of teamwork outshine the demerits or working as individuals or not having a teamwork in the business. This term (teamwork) which can simply be defined as a workforce that involves cooperation among workers for the sake of achieving a certain goal that the intact team is working towards, and for the well-being of the company, but an effectual, well-functioning team is much more than this. (West, 2012).
For any teamwork to become effective, contribution of workers fair share to the workload is a paramount issue which enables the company to achieve its goals in a timely and pleasing way.
As mentioned before, teamwork definition has several varieties and this make it even difficult to distinguish between teamwork and cooperation between workers. In this case, team work is said to be more complicated than cooperation among workers while on the other hand, cooperation is more vital to teamwork, since it`s moderately competent to help teams achieve their goals. The enthusiasm to cooperate starts from the relationship that emerges between the coworkers/ employees and the employers. Relationship between the staffs of any business is seen as a paramount aspect as teamwork cannot exist without the key component in this case (good relationship), even if the relationship is minimal. Teamwork never occurs if people don`t cooperate and do things on their own since it`s hinders the goals achieving of any given business or institution Gerson & Gerson (2007).
For one to understand the well meaning of teamwork, it is fundamental to look at the advantages as well the disadvantages of teamwork.
Advantages of teamwork
Advantages of teamwork are numerous as compared to its disadvantages. Advantages stems from good relationship, learning, leadership, proper co-ordination, commitment among other. In this case, we shall analyze the paramount advantages and see what teamwork entails.
Getting of more ideas is one of the foremost issues. In this case members in a group bring their minds together hence coming up with their own fields of expertise to the group and in this way; outshining skills are developed within the group. As it is known that two heads are better than one, teamwork brings more minds, meaning there are more ideas as well. For this reason, the process of innovation speeds up since different ideas are brought within a short span of time (West, 2012).
Solving of problem or incase coming up with ideas mature more faster since people in a teamwork evaluate the work from different perspectives while reducing the chances of mistakes
Work burden is another thing that teamwork reduces. In this case, a task that could be done by an individual and take longer before being solve, its reduced when it comes to teamwork as its discussed by a time hence reducing the work burden while improving the quality of any given task.
Teams are known to create an environment of support and impel people towards accomplishment. In this case, a team environment boost the confidence of individuals, giving them a chance to do their best
Being in good teams makes the most individual talents. For this option, where a certain member may be weak, there might be a stronger person in the group and working together, they provide a perfect solution for something hence perfect solution for an organization.
Learning is enhanced in team work. This is brought about by individuals who train each other. As long as people in a teamwork work together, the more they work together, the more they learn from each other and becoming better workers while improving the quality of services of their institutions and achieving the goals in a simple manner.
When it comes to administering teamwork, it is easier as compared to individual`s administration. This enables work to be done faster and easier making institutions or business to achieve their goals in timely and with minimal errors.
