Introduction
When humans left the hunter-gatherer and attempted to settle down within civilized environments, the transition created an indeterminate society that had to implement specific procedures to shape its way of life into a feasibly integrated archetype. After the emergence of organized societies, people leveraged such strength to ensure they did not allow any form of disturbance that could undermine the existing peace and integrity. Social pressure for conformity significantly influences the functioning and ideas that run modern communities. One of the societal expectations is that people avoid aggressive behavior, which undermines social, psychological, and emotional wellbeing. These three factors explain the concept of mental health. More importantly, mental health affects how we think, handle stress, make choices, and relate with others. In this way, the individual is responsible for ensuring healthy lifestyles that enhance their community’s psychological, social, and emotional wellness. A person’s fundamental responsibility is to uphold respect for humanity, live in harmony with one’s neighbors, and follow societal rules.
The sociology of mental wellness provides an integrative support system for researching societal factors and how they influence mental health. The mental health issues, including severe psychological disorders, affect the quality of life across the community. Stress and socioeconomic status influence mental illnesses and conditions, including aggressive behaviors. Individuals with higher psychological wellbeing are inclined to have healthier lifestyles, including avoiding aggressive behavior. People with mental health issues develop a sense of identity when they feel wanted, valued, and part of the wider community they live in or a society from which they derive their identity (Krahé, 2020). These aspects of mental wellness influence an individual’s identity. Socioeconomic status affects a person’s wellness in terms of satisfaction with mental health and general life satisfaction.
Topic
This paper aims to evaluate the impact of disruptive behavior disorder on the subject of wellness through the lenses of sociology of wellness, identity and wellness, psychological wellness, and socioeconomic status and wellness. In this section, the impact of aggressive behavior on the modern world has been expounded based on the above-mentioned critical lenses. Regarding the link between mental health wellness and sociology, aggression is termed as any behavior intended to cause harm to another person who is seeking to enhance their wellness by avoiding harm. The sociology of wellness lens would conceptualize aggressive behavior via its capacity to cause various negative social implications, including murder, theft, rape, family conflict, and crime. Aggressive behavior is an issue to worry about within the social sphere, given its potential to trigger violence, terrorism, and war, thus undermining the community’s overall wellness. While victims of aggression and violence are at a heightened risk of experiencing emotional and psychological traumatic reactions and mental health disorders such as depression, phobias, and attaches, aggressors are also negatively impacted (Krahé, 2020). This includes the risk of legal reprisal, including imprisonment, in some instances.
Regarding identity and wellness, aggressive behavior plays a mediating role in influencing people to alienate themselves as “them” versus “us.” Self -categorization due to differences in behavior among societal groups can undermine social interactions and information-sharing experiences within contemporary society, further providing an impetus for conflicts (Krahé, 2020). Socioeconomic status impacts wellness by influencing people to categorize themselves into classes via the analogy described above. It is a determinant of mental health as individuals of low socioeconomic class struggle with poverty and deteriorated healthy outcomes, including life quality (Knez et al., 2020).
II: Lens Analysis
A: History
From a historical perspective, disruptive behavior disorder continues to be one of the most significant behavioral problems affecting school-going children, especially adolescents (Muratori et al., 2016). The disorder has been flagged as problematic, considering that it has been found to affect individuals in their adulthood. Affected individuals stand a high chance of impaired growth in terms of delinquency, substance abuse, violence, and antisocial behavior, which may manifest in adulthood and lead to criminal activity. The problem continues to be one of the most discussed challenges affecting teenagers and young adults, lacking effective solutions due to the diverse nature of motivating factors. Research indicates that the problem, although not new, is quite challenging since the underlying factors are varied and systemic to the extent that the solutions available presently are inadequate (Christenson et al., 2016). Thus, although preventive interventions have been developed to resolve the disorder have been developed, underlying challenges regarding context and applicability to different scenarios have undermined such efforts.
B: Humanities
From a humanities perspective, the topic is discussed within a psychological context and, in particular, the understanding of discipline within the society. This is the case considering that different societies view disruptive behavior from different perspectives. Although this is the case, the current discussion focuses on the western culture, which has the most reported cases and research regarding the issue. The most recent research indicates that disruptive behavior has become a significant issue in western culture following a deep interdependence between the disorder and other elements such as socialization and wellbeing (Gaete-Silva & Gaete, 2021). To explain their stance, the authors argue that the issue has become problematic since the elements of discipline and punishment within the society have lost their legitimacy to the extent that they aggravate the problems (Gaete-Silva & Gaete, 2021). Their view is that society’s morals have decayed to the extent that the traditional moral transitions no longer exist.
