Nursing Care Models
Introduction
The current changes in the healthcare sector around the world demand for effective leadership and management strategies to deal with the complex demands of the emerging trends in the delivery of quality patient care. Besides the rising demand for the delivery of quality patient care, healthcare facilities face various challenges ranging from the increasing rate of acute care patients, the nursing shortage and the high rate of turnovers in the nursing profession. Nursing shortage and the high rate of nursing turnover, for instance, deny the healthcare facilities of the key resources necessary for the effective delivery of quality care, patient safety, and job satisfaction among nurses. The rising cost of health care and the demand for affordable quality care among the patients further complicate the realization of the said objectives due to financial constraints on both the organizations and the patients. Nursing care models play a significant role in addressing the diverse challenges facing healthcare organizations through the equally unique frameworks upon which the primary objectives of improving the quality of patient care, safety, and staff satisfaction can be achieved.
Team Nursing Care Model
One of the most effective and comprehensive nursing care models for the achievement of the objectives is the team or modular nursing care delivery system. Team care nursing model refers to a system of delivering patient care that involves the assignment of a group of nurses to a particular group of patients admitted in a given healthcare facility (Finkleman, 2012). A group of nurses with diverse capabilities ranging from their skills, education, and level of experience are assigned to a set of patients within the facility. The group of nurses consists of a team of registered nurses (RN), licensed practical nurses (LN), as well as the enrolling nurses (EN) who coordinate their expertise in delivering quality patient care to all the assigned patients (Finkleman, 2012). The group of nurses works under the supervision of a nurse leader who ensures compliance and participation of all members in attending to the scheduled patients and thus maintaining smooth coordination of the tasks carried by the group in carrying their diverse tasks. Each member of the team of nurses carries out a specific task or rather provide care to the patients by the delegated roles by the nurse leaders. The nurse leaders have to acquaint themselves with the level of expertise for each member to ensure the effective delivery of quality care to each of the patients’ health care needs (Finkleman, 2012). The nurses thus share both the burden of responsibility to the patients and accountability in the delivery of quality care. Besides promoting good communication between the nurse leader and the team, and among the group members, Team nursing model serves as a useful tool for addressing the barriers to the actualization of the primary objectives of improved care, patient safety, and the staff satisfaction.
Other merits of the model include the maximum exploitation of all the members’ skills and capabilities, facilitating the upward mobility of less experienced nurses, and increasing the nurses’ sense of belonging through their diverse contribution to the group’s success (Finkleman, 2012). The interdependence of the nurses further enhances patient safety as it reduces the occurrence of errors in the administration of patient care. The highlighted advantages serve to increase job satisfaction and thus reducing high nursing turnover. It also reduces the cost of management as it becomes easier to supervise all the nursing staff while monitoring the growth and development of recruits. The fact that the new nurses are grouped with experienced registered nurses reduces the cost of training. Additionally, the emerging trend of increase in the number of nurses with advanced education in the nursing profession has increased the number of qualified nurse leaders for the effective implementation of the model (Finkleman, 2012).

According to the authors, the model serves as an effective framework for addressing the organizational challenges affecting the delivery of quality care, improving patient safety, and enhancing job satisfaction among nurses. The article builds on evidence-based nursing practice in a healthcare organization where the model achieved positive outcomes upon its implementation (Dickerson, 2017). It describes the process of implementation of the model at the facility and compares its positive outcomes to the pre-implementation period. It also echoes the advantages above of increased patient satisfaction, and improved safety, through improved quality care delivery and the nurses’ improved job satisfaction. The authors share a common belief in the model being the most appropria...
