Abstract
This paper is aimed at understanding the leadership style that is most effective, efficient and can be used by nursing leaders, managers and directors. It will also discuss on the characteristics, strengths and weaknesses of a good leadership style and the strategies that can be adopted to improve the leadership styles. The paper will also discuss on the individual philosophy and aspiration in leadership especially those of health. The paper will also intend to discuss on the important aspects of philosophy as a tool for effective leadership in any field of study. It will further discuss on the strengths and weaknesses of the leadership styles as well as the transition and the theory practice gap in nursing leadership. The mission and vision of nursing leadership will also be discussed especially in matters of health.
Introduction
Leadership is very crucial in an organization .It can be regarded as the backbone of the business, so the best leadership should be used in an organization for better and quality delivery of services. The best leadership styles should be used in attaining the goals of the organization .Nurses while undertaking their duties and responsibilities should be guided by dignity and respect for patients’ care .The culture of leadership should be in a way that it can accommodate encouragement, attentiveness and rewards. Leadership should always be geared towards provision of quality services and that’s why there is need for leaders to have leadership philosophy and styles of leadership for implementation. The gap between theory and practices should be bridged for better service delivery.
The management and the directors of nursing field should possess the quality leadership skills which they will encourage nurses to practice for betterment of the vision of nursing. Nurses should consider patients first in all matters concerning their practices. The democratic leadership should be adopted by the nurses.
Leadership philosophy
The leadership philosophy is the combination of ideas attributes belief and an expectation of an individual towards leadership. The leadership philosophy is very essential and it explains opinions one has in relation to leadership and what others can expect from an individual. My personal philosophies on leadership include;
As a leader I will advocate for the adoption of communication as a way of reaching employees. Communication is an essential element in nursing practices and it assist in conveying the messages from leaders to the nurses on various issues. Communication will help in coordination of nurses within and outside the facility for certain professional functions. It will also aid in airing of grievances of nurses to the management in an easy way so that they can be worked on, for instance the complaints about the delay of wages and salaries to the management. Communication will be of benefit to leaders, for instance communicating new changes in the profession.
As a leader I will be able to use my skills in decision making especially those that are concerned with leadership. Conflicts may arise in various areas within the facility and may need to be solved accordingly; such conflicts need to be decided on with good decision making. The ability to solve conflicts in the organization is one of the best qualities of a good leader. Leaders who can make decisions independently always make informed decisions, for instance the conflict between nurses can be better solved by the manager (Giltinane, 2013).
Any successful leader should be passionate about his role in leadership. The leader should also be happy with his work and that of the organization to excel in leading others. The employees like nurses will not be able to work passionately if the leader is not a mentor, the leader should also ensure that he has shown happiness even when there are challenges and problems in the organization. In my opinion passion and enthusiasm is the best attributes of a good leader in any organization, for instance being happy even if there was targets were not met by health workers.
It is important taking risks in leadership especially when trying to implement other ideas and strategies. A good leader should be able to able to take higher risks especially those that are aimed at improving the organizations image. The leader should take the risks of ensuring that the innovations are done to adopt the current changes in the business and the advancement of technology so as to stay competitive in the market. In my opinion the leader should be an individual who is able to take risks for the good of an organization for instance taking a risk in implementation of new technology which has not been tested for effectiveness.
Intelligence
The democratic leadership needs a leader to be smart and intelligent .The leader must then possess integrity in leading, as he will need to keep duties and responsibilities in progress. The leader in this case should be able to give employees enough insight about the business and help them make good decisions. It is not an easy task when leading people of diverse culture and background for common goal that is why it may be important for the leader to apply intelligence and integrity for efficiency in an organization. The leader may use integrity in areas of production for example when encouraging employees to emphasize quality services.
Leaders who are democratic need to embrace honesty in their duties and responsibilities. The leader should talk with openness with his employees. Good leadership is that which keeps employees happy every time. There should be no information that is concealed, it should be open for effective decision making while engaging employees. However leader should make opinions and engage juniors in the process of decision making for better decision making, for instance when consulting which area need improvement in organization.
A democratic leadership should show the aspect of creativity for success in an organization. The leader should be in front ensuring that he has given good ideas for improvement. The innovative ideas must be put forward in realization of the goals and objective of the business. The leaders should as well ensure that the juniors are helped in the implementation of ideas. The creative thinking should be applied in the business and be supported by the leader at all costs, for instance creativity on better and improved technology of sharing information in an organization (Huber, 2013).
The leader should be able to do tasks with great emphasize on fairness. Most of the decisions are made through the majority votes, even when decisions are made through this way the leader should not lean on one part and leave the other, he must incorporate all stakeholders. This will be arrived at by ensuring that the there is a clear framework which will guide the execution of duties. The employees will not cooperate with the leader if he intends to favor a particular employee to others. A leader should involve all employees for instance when making decisions on ways of improving working conditions.
The democratic leadership enables the managers and directors to encourage every nurse to have one voice and collectively make making. The style also ensures that there is good communication across different departments in the hospital facility. The style enables the nurses and doctors to feel that they are recognized in their daily work. The use of this style of leadership makes the nurses to work towards achieving their goals and set targets, especially when the organization need to improve on certain areas of concern in nursing.
