Introduction
The research design is defined as an overall strategy to handle established research questions through qualitative and quantitative research, data collection, interpretation, and data discussion (Gray et al., 2018). The report analyses two research articles in nursing. One is quantitative, and the other is qualitative, intending to analyze how these research designs are conducted and analyzed in a research setting.
Qualitative Research
Characteristics of the Qualitative Research
Qualitative research is the data collection method that emphasizes collecting data through open-ended and conversational forms. The research entails the perception of people on a given issue/ phenomenon. Most nursing studies rely on qualitative research as it provides a detailed insight into the problem and uncovers trends, thoughts, and opinions of the research respondents.
Comparison of Qualitative Research Methodologies
In-depth one-on-one interviews are purely conversational based, which invites respondents to get detailed information on a given topic. The method provides an opportunity to collect precise and meaningful information (Maxwell, 2012). The focus group is another methodology where the data is compiled from a limited number of respondents from the target market. The method is expensive and complex; however, valuable information is collected to test new concepts. Finally, case study research evaluates a single entity or an organization with its operational styles, challenges, and other related activities. Here, the researcher goes deeper dive into analyzing a particular organization (Bradshaw & Stratford, 2010). All three methods are entirely different from each other in their setting and research agenda.
Strengths and Weaknesses of Qualitative Research
Qualitative research provides in-depth information on a given issue; it further explains the phenomena and evaluates underlying issues to resolve them. As a result, researchers generate new ideas and theories and create their environment to validate the research. However, the disadvantage of the qualitative research approach is that it is very time-consuming with no clear strategy for analysis (Maxwell, 2012). In addition, the data interpretation is subjective in qualitative research.
Qualitative Research Design Usage in Research
The research design is used to analyze the information through language and behavior in a natural environment. It captures the expressive information regarding beliefs, values, and motivation for specific behavior.
Analysis of a Qualitative Research in Nursing
Purpose of the Study
The research aims to explore the collaboration experiences of junior physicians and nurses in the general ward setting (Tang et al., 2018).
Study Design
Two researchers conducted a semi-structured interview to collect the relevant information. Before performing the interview, the researchers conducted a literature review on the topic to have in-depth details of the variables (Tang et al., 2018). According to Mohajan (2018), such a study design is appropriate because very limited researches have been conducted in the area. Hence, the investigations allow the researcher to identify and rectify the data saturation.
Ethical Issues
The ethical issues are handled efficiently; first, the university's Institutional Review Board approved the research. Secondly, all participants were not forced to participate in the study if they were not willing. These respondents were given a right to withdraw. Their consent was taken before the interview, and their confidentiality and anonymity were assured (Tang et al., 2018). Maxwell (2012) emphasizes the above-mentioned ethical aspects.
Sampling Method and Recruitment Strategy
Purposive sampling was used to recruit participants. The participants were selected from a tertiary care hospital in Singapore.
Sampling Approach Appropriation
Purposive sampling is appropriate for the researcher as it allowed the researcher to describe in-depth the finding. Moreover, according to Maxwell (2012), the approach is time and cost-effective. Besides, the approach was appropriate as only the participants with sufficient experience nursing phenomena in question could effectively respond to the interview questions. Therefore, it would have been unwise to provide equal opportunity of participation, as in probability sampling.
Data Collection Methods
The qualitative, semi-structured interviews were conducted to analyze the relationship between variables. The approach is appropriate to collect information from highly skilled and well-informed respondents as the sample for this study.
Data Analysis
Thematic analyses were used to conduct the research, which is an appropriate strategy for comparing themes and subthemes and generating a thematic map relevant to research objectives.
