Personal Leadership Assessment
Leadership plays an integral role within an organization and often used as a gauging tool for measuring success, productivity, and employees’ performance. Therefore, leaders are tasked with ensuring people around them are inspired to achieve success, navigate against uncertain odds, and be optimistic about a better future (Kouzes & Posner, 2017). Leadership styles vary depending on an individual’s leadership doctrine and leadership traits one possesses. Leadership can either be inborn or learned, but the bottom line is that leaders are responsible for developing and achieving an organization’s vision and ensuring members are encouraged to work on a common goal and objective. Today, one needs to undertake the process of understanding one's leadership capabilities. This contemplation allows contemporaries to identify their leadership capabilities. This paper argues that effective leadership stems from a personal leadership assessment of strengths and weaknesses. The evaluation includes reflecting on the mission, vision, leadership development plan, and anticipated outcomes. Also, the assessment can be done by completing a leadership assessment using leadership tools such as the Myer-Briggs type indicator. Adoption of remedial measures and reinforcing areas of weaknesses and strengths is an ingredient to overcoming deficiencies. More so, leaders who are self-aware successfully monitor their progress while at the same time charting a futuristic plan that comes with positive achievements at personal and organizational levels.
Personal Leadership Mission
Exceptional leadership ensures all people are appropriately represented. To do this, leaders listen to people's needs and strive to ensure their demands are settled. One example can be listening to patient's need around wait times and attempting to speed up long queues while patients seek treatment. For instance, listening to patients’ needs and striving to meet their demands, such as long queues while seeking treatment. From these revelations, as a leader, my mission is to ensure members’ autonomy is upheld. Further, encouraging innovative ideas and instilling hope is what drives my desire to lead in a nursing setting. These aspects are bound to have an all-inclusive team discussion culminating in a common goal or objective for a better future.
Personal Leadership Vision
A leader is tasked with overseeing the organization’s actions both in a current and future state. Therefore, for any leader, having a plan while at the helm of leadership is pivotal. Having plans makes a leader plan and execute plans effectively, realizing positive strides such as meeting the organization’s objective as well as fulfilling one’s desires (Azad et al., 2017). In the same vein, my vision as a leader in the nursing setting is to lead a group where everybody feels secure, later translating to job satisfaction among members. This vision can be actualized by having short and long-term goals. The short-term goal is ensuring members are happy and their needs are appropriately handled. The long-term goals will be to see that are changes are crucial, should be well defined, and incorporated into the system by default. Leadership goals include bringing all people into the process of change. Alongside this vision, there is a need to have an organization’s blueprint that will dictate the organization’s future for almost six years before being amended. I believe that the organization’s blueprint should ensure that workforce in the healthcare sector work to incorporate a strategy to meet patients’ demands and guaranteeing quality care at the same time.
Assessment of Personal Leadership Attributes and Skills
A nurse is tasked with critical yet essential roles that ensure patients receive quality care. Also, as a nurse leader, one must ensure a nuanced nurse-patient relationship to achieve positive results. These critical roles demand an individual who excels in exceptional leadership qualities and skills. This is where a personal leadership assessment comes in handy. The assessment touches on different leadership aspects ranging from leadership skills to conflict management style. Self-assessments advance self-awareness by highlighting personal and professional strengths and presenting an individual with areas that need improvement.
Personal Leadership Skills
Leadership skills are essential in the nursing setting by dictating how a leader interacts with members and patients for a better future. I managed to score an average of 68 from my leadership skills assessment. This score implies that I am on the right track of becoming an exceptional leader (MindTools, n.d.). Self-confidence and positive attitudes are the leading personal traits analyzed by the assessment. These traits define a successful leader in the sense that self-confident people always yearn to inspire others to achieve greatness. Likewise, a positive-minded and optimistic leader tries to make the best regardless of the prevailing situation. Often an optimistic leader finds it easy to turn pitfalls into successful endeavors. The results have highlighted that I exhibit high levels of self-confidence, managing to score 10 out of 10. This attribute reflects my stature. In essence, I am always confident in whatever I engage in and even amidst uncertainty. Self-confidence will ensure that if an error such as medical negligence is committed, I will bring in my interpersonal competences to facilitate consensus between aggrieved parties guaranteeing that healthcare services continue uninterrupted.
Further, the assessment has also revealed that I have an imitable attitude and outlook, where I also scored 10 of 10. I have a positive mindset that, to the extent, is attributable to strong leadership. This trait will be ideal in a nursing environment by ensuring the organization’s brand is maintained positively. However, as much as I have scored highly in this skill, I need to blend a positive attitude and outlook with developing a strong sense of balance and acknowledging that setbacks are part of an organization’s undertakings (MindTools, n.d.). Therefore, there is a need to approach situations realistically, ready to institute changes to avert a problem.
Emotional intelligence is another notable skill highlighted by the leadership assessment. I performed excellently in managing to score ten out of ten. This concept is concerned with how a leader relates with members more emotionally. It is concerned with understanding members’ feelings and managing emotions to develop strong relationships successfully (MindTools, n.d.). I agree with this result because I am always reserved, especially when talking to people or people. I tend to give people a chance to air out their views while reading the mood before coming up with an appropriate decision. This skill will work a great deal in my nursing leadership r...
