Background
In the movie Peaceful Warrior, the character "Socrates" (as played by Nick Nolte) says that "There's no greater purpose than service to others." This is the premise upon which servant leadership is based. However, in today's economy, we see many leaders who are motivated by money, power, and prestige, not motivated by serving others.
Our forefathers, including the first presidents of the United States, were motivated beyond material considerations by the deeper purpose of service to the establishment of this country. Similarly, leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Mahatma Gandhi were motivated by a higher purpose (i.e., the civil rights movement and independence for India, respectively) and spurred their followers on to greater heights. Many servant leaders had followers who continued in their traditions following the leader's death (e.g., King and followers Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton).
This Case will examine leadership styles through the lens of the servant and spiritual leader.

Case Assignment
Drawing on the material in the background readings and doing additional research, please prepare a 5- to 6-page paper (not including the cover and reference pages) in which you
1. Compare and contrast servant and spiritual leadership styles.
2. Analyze the leadership style of a contemporary leader whose style encompasses servant and spiritual leadership.
Keys to the Assignment
• Compare and contrast the two leadership styles. A table may be a good way to summarize some of the key points you come up with.
• Choose a leader whose leadership style exemplifies servant and spiritual leadership (you may need to choose two separate leaders). You might want to look in Fortune Magazine’s Top 100 Companies to Work For 2014 from the website http://www(dot)greatplacetowork(dot)com/best-companies/100-best-companies-to-work-for. Alternatively, you may want to choose someone you know personally who has been written about in a reputable magazine or journal article.
• Research this leader and his/her organization, and then answer the following questions.
o Analyze the leader in terms of their servant and spiritual leadership styles.
o What is the added value of this leadership style? What other style(s) do they exhibit?
o What impact / effect does this leadership style have on the organization’s overall image and how they conduct their “business”?
o Contrast this leadership style with United Airlines, named the worst company in America to work for by glassdoor.com.
o Based on your experiences and research, what kind of leadership style is needed to promote excellence in an organization? Justify your response.
• These are not the only things must be covered, but are the minimum. You are encouraged to go deeper with the assignment and use your critical thinking skills to ascertain what other areas are important in making a company one of the top ones in which to work
Assignment Expectations
Your paper will be evaluated using the following five criteria:
• Assignment-Driven Criteria (Precision and Breadth): Does the paper fully address all Keys to the Assignment? Are the concepts behind the Keys to the Assignment addressed accurately and precisely using sound logic? Does the paper meet minimum length requirements?
• Critical Thinking (Critical Thinking and Depth): Does the paper demonstrate graduate-level analysis, in which information derived from multiple sources, expert opinions, and assumptions has been critically evaluated and synthesized in the formulation of a logical set of conclusions? Does the paper address the topic with sufficient depth of discussion and analysis?
• Business Writing (Clarity and Organization): Is the paper well written (clear, developed logically, and well organized)? Are the grammar, spelling, and vocabulary appropriate for graduate-level work? Are section headings included in all papers? Are paraphrasing and synthesis of concepts the primary means of responding to the Keys to the Assignment, or is justification/support instead conveyed through excessive use of direct quotations?
• Effective Use of Information (Information Literacy and References): Does the paper demonstrate that the student has read, understood and can apply the background materials for the module? If required, has the student demonstrated effective research, as evidenced by student’s use of relevant and quality (library?) sources? Do additional sources used in paper provide strong support for conclusions drawn, and do they help in shaping the overall paper?
• Citing Sources: Does the student demonstrate understanding of APA Style of referencing, by inclusion of proper end references and in-text citations (for paraphrased text and direct quotations) as appropriate? Have all sources (e.g., references used from the Background page, the assignment readings, and outside research) been included, and are these properly cited? Have all end references been included within the body of the paper as in-text citations?
Tips and Suggestions
Please note the following tips and suggestions:
• Include a cover page and reference page, in addition to the 5–6 pages of analysis described above.
• Include headings for all papers greater than 2 pages (basically all papers)
• Cite AND reference all sources that you use in your work, including those that you do not quote but paraphrase. This means include citations and quotation marks for direct quotes of more than 5 words, and citations for that information which you have "borrowed" or paraphrased from other sources.

Introduction
Contemporary organizations are in this dispensation facing intense pressures, a factor that is forcing such organizations to operate in complex environments. Due to the globalized nature of economic activities and the democratization of technology, these organizations are now competing in the world’s labor markets that are intensely linked to good leadership and governance (Barbuto, & Wheeler, 2007). To confront these challenges, organizations need to develop decisive leadership approaches and styles that motivate the employees into high performances. It is also essential to determine the fact that responding to these challenges requires a transformative approach that seeks to improve the organizational effectiveness while addressing the expanded needs of the organization. The only approach viable for such organizations is in deriving appropriate leadership styles.
Spiritual and servant leadership styles are emerging paradigms that have the potential of guiding organizational transformation and development in organizations. Through these styles of leadership, an organization has the capacity to integrate the well-being of its human resources and its performances in a manner that maximizes its performance (Barbuto, & Wheeler, 2007). This paper, therefore, seeks to determine the comparison and contrast between the servant and spiritual leadership styles. Additionally, the paper will also undertake an analysis of a leadership style of a contemporary leader whose style of governance encompasses both the servant and spiritual leadership styles.
Comparison and Contrast of Servant and Spiritual Leadership
In the contemporary business world, there is an increase in interest in implementing the servant leadership theories within an organization's leadership structure since this approach entail the setting aside of a leader's self-interest for the betterment of the employees within the organization (Freeman, 2011). This approach of leadership postulates leader’s spiritual beliefs in the formation of a leader’s behaviors and values. Additionally, the model also posits the fact that spiritual practices such as meditation, prayer, and the reading of the scriptures are essential in directing the behavior of a leader.
On the other hand, spiritual leadership infers to the casual theory of a spiritual leader that is based on altruistic love, vision, hope and faith, a factor that provides ground for an intrinsic motivational theorist (Freeman, 2011). Spiritual leaders have the capacity to tap into the ultimate needs of both the leader and their followers through an approach that gives meaning to an individual’s life and membership in which an individual is accepted and appreciated unconditionally within an organization. The table below provides a comparison and contrast between the spiritual and servant leadership styles. Figure 1.

This approach of leadership postulates leader’s spiritual beliefs in the formation of a leader’s behaviors and values.
Spiritual leadership infers to the casual theory of a spiritual leader that is based on altruistic love, vision, hope, and faith, a factor that provides ground for an intrinsic motivational theorist.
The basic purpose of the servant leadership style is based on four primary principles that give a leader the moral authority; Sacrifice, conscience thus giving the leader a moral authority, inspiration and devotion to worthy purposes, inaugurates an approach through which the ends and means are determined as inseparable and introduces a leader to a world of relationships (Nagy, 2013).
The main purpose of this style of leadership is to create visions and values within the employees of an organization, a factor that empowers the organization levels and teams and promotes the productivity and commitment of an organization (Nagy, 2013).
This leadership model is rooted in morals and values that include having a guided purpose and vision, trusting and empowering others, loving others and lastly submitting under authority.
The spiritual approach to leadership includes two fundamental elements within a leader's life; the belief that the activities of an individual have value and mining beyond self-gratification and economic benefits.
The values of a servant leader can be summed up as a concept that cares for others, the society and institutions, factors that remain essential in this form of leadership.
The spiritual form of leadership ensures that meaning is fostered in the values that include vision within a leader.
Contemporary Leaders Style Encompassing the Servant and Spiritual Leadership
It is essential to determine the fact that organizations that employ the spiritual and servant leadership approaches within their functions enable their employees to realize that they have an inner life that helps them in finding meaning in their various work areas (Parris, & Peachey, 2013).In this, organizations providing a culture in which workplace spirituality is cherished have realized that their workers feel as valued members within the organization since spiritual organizations provide approaches through which their employees make constructive contribution to their work responsibilities.
