Terrorism in the World
Introduction
Terrorism involves the intimidation of an organization, nation, or person by individual or group of people who are vulnerable and defenseless through the use of threat and or violence to get economic, political, or social objectives (Enders and Sandler 9). Terrorisms occur due to social and political motives, as well as its essence of violence. Terrorists use violent acts, especially the use of bombs in public places to attack public areas with many people who attend their daily activities. Other terrorists behead victims, as well as downing commercial airlines, among others, as forms of intimidation to people at the public places in unpredictable ways. Such terrorists ensure total circumvent of the normal channels forcing nations to heed to their demands and diverting a public fund to their coffers or potential targets. The high rates of terrorism continue to derail many nations of their resources; thus, nations need measures to curb terrorism. Proactive techniques prove to be the best countermeasures to terrorism, especially those that take the form of retaliatory raids against the other sponsorship nations providing financial resources, training, logistic support, sanctuary, and training to the terror groups.
Terrorism and Incidences of Terrorists Attacks
Controversies about terrorism arise from discussions and researches. Experts affirm the causes of terror incidences, such as outlining the motives of the terrorists, the causes, and grievances.
The most recent terrorist attacks in the world include the August 17, 2017 terror attack in Spanish that left 13 people dead and more than 100 people injured in Las Ramblas Barcelona. Police officers later shot dead five terrorists with fake suicide vests in Cambrils in Barcelona (Foster 1).
Separately, on June 19, 2017, and attacked happened in Finsbury Park with a van driver mowing down Muslim worshippers on the Seven Sisters Road near Finsbury Park Mosque. The incident led to the death of one person and eight people injured. Darren Osborne was the suspect at the scene and got charged with murder and attempt murder (Foster 1).
Also, a terrorist attack happened on June 3 2017, in London, whereby a terrorist at the London Bridge killed eight people, with many people getting injuries near the Borough Market. The police officers at the rescue area shot dead people with knives after mowing down pedestrians on the bridge and proceeded with their killing spree (Foster 1).
Other terror attacks included the Manchester terror incident on May 22 2017. The incident happened when a suicide bomber detonated different explosives among fans killing 22 people and causing 59 injuries at the Ariana Grande concert at Manchester Arena. Other attacks include the Paris shooting in April 2017, the Westminster attack, and the Stockholm terror incident (Foster 1).
On other occasions, deaths arising from terrorism yearly are more than 18,000 with the militia groups such as Islamic State, Al-Shabaab, the Taliban, and Boko Haram being the perpetrators. The Global Terrorism Index 2018, revealed by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), noted that the terror organization killed 10,632 people in 2017 alone. The result of such atrocities led to the instability in Afghanistan, Nigeria, Somalia, Iraq, and Syria. Thus, the terrorist groups are responsible for 44 percent of deaths in the past decade (Dudley 1).
The Islamic State or the Arab world, especially the ISIS and ISIL terror group, accounts for 4,350 deaths in 2017, especially in Syria and Iraq. The group often launches bombings and explosions that account for 69 percent of their attacks coupled with assassinations and carrying hostage-takings, among others. Nevertheless, the attack of the Islamic State seems to reduce on a yearly basis with respect to the number of deaths in 2017, accounting for 9,150 less compared to 2016 (Dudley 1).
The Taliban is responsible for 3,571 deaths as of 2017 with the group waging war in Afghanistan against the U.S. A backed coalition government. The group controlled 11 percent of the nation, accounting for 398 districts in Afghanistan. Moreover, the militia group is active in most of the provinces accounting for 70 percent of the nation. The Taliban terror group launched 699 attacks leading to 3,571 deaths with the bombing and armed assaults in the nation as well as neighboring countries such as Pakistan, among others. The terrorist group launched 59 attacks in Pakistan, killing 5.1 persons per attack on average. Recently, the Taliban attacks military bases, military personnel, and police officers resulting in 2,419 deaths of officers in 2017. Moreover, the attacks continued to rise from 369 to 386 per attack in 2017. Nevertheless, the deaths of civilians during such attacks reduce to 548 from 1,233 in the year 2016 (Dudley 1).
Al-Shabaab, as another militia group, accounts for 1,457 deaths. The group emerged in 2016 as an affiliation of Al-Qaida terrorizing nations such as Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda. The group launches its major attacks Somalia with the worst attack in 2017 responsible for 588 deaths, with 316 people injured. The Al-Shabaab used explosions and bombings as well as holding people hostages (Dudley 1).
Separately, Boko Haram, as a terrorist group, is in Nigeria responsible for 1,254 deaths in the year 2017. The group emerged in 2002 in North-Eastern Nigeria in 2002 and spread to Niger, Cameroon, and Chad with their allegiance to Islamic State. The currently, the group decrease in their launching activities due to the security forces assisted by the international groups that help in curbing such attacks. Moreover, Boko Haram was responsible for 40 percent of attacks leading to 15 percent of deaths in 2017 compared to 2016. Most of the attacks happened in Nigeria in the Borno State extending to Cameroon and Niger with mass hostage-takings and use of children and women as suicide bombers (Dudley 1).
