Recitatif is an amazing story involving Twyla and Roberta. The two individuals first connect in an orphanage for children, which is called St. Bonny. This is after each of them is taken away from their parents. The characters involved in the story are from different racial backgrounds. This is demonstrated through the theme of race and prejudice demonstrated throughout the play. First, the race of Twyla and Roberta are debatable. However, there is clear separation based on class, and none is acknowledged as White or African American.
