Research Proposal Instructions:

1 X 2500 word Research Proposal (100%)

This assignment assesses students on their understanding of how to design a piece of research. Students will demonstrate:

  • they have identified a researchable topic and formulated an appropriate research question.
  • familiarity with the academic literature on their subject from which they have developed a rationale for their research.
  • understanding of how to match their proposed methodology and data collection methods with the question.
  • they have applied their understanding from their learning across this module, drawing on a range of sessions and bibliography as appropriate.

Please note that you are not asked to actually collect the data or do the analyses for this assessment.

The research proposal should consist of:

  • Title of the research project
  • Introduction (approx. 250 - 400 words) should:
  • capture the interest of the reader. There are many ways to achieve this. For example, you may draw on the normative importance of your research topic. You could discuss a debate in current scholarship or a puzzle that we do not yet understand.
  • state your research question clearly.
  • explain why we should care about the answer to your research question and the potential benefits of the research (e.g., policy and normative implications).
  • Literature Review (approx. 800 - 1000 words) should:
  • demonstrate detailed knowledge of relevant literature.
  • focus on issues directly relevant to your research project and not be a list of summaries of individual books and articles.
  • cite at least 10 and at most 20 academic books or articles that are relevant to your research
  • analyse and synthesize critically relevant literature.
  • situate your research project in relevant literature and argue why the research question is of importance and interest.
  • include a critical and analytical rationale for why you will research this topic, based on reviewing the literature relevant to your topic.

  • Research Question (approx. 50 - 200 words) should:

  • identify and state clearly the research question that your research seeks to answer (Do not propose more than one research question).
  • state hypotheses (if there are any) and brief rationales behind them (i.e. why do you expect the hypothesized relationships?)
  • Research Design (approx. 800 - 1000 words) should:
  • outline the proposed methodological approach. It is recommended that you avoid “mixed methods” as the time and effort involved are far greater than a single method.
  • discuss why the proposed methodology is the most appropriate for answering your research question. Choose two other methods from the module that could be used to address your research question and then explain why you chose your proposed method instead of the others.
  • identify and discuss any limitations of your proposed method in relation to your research.
  • discuss and justify in detail the data collection methods to be used. For example, if you propose content analysis or documentary analysis, you may discuss which texts, speeches or images to analyse. For interviews or a survey, include a list of key questions, information about sampling, etc. If you propose an experiment, include information about the setup of the experiment and a list of key questions. If you propose comparative method, you should discuss which cases to compare and why.
  • discuss how you plan to analyse the data to answer your research question and how that will allow you to answer your research question.
  • discuss how you plan to address ethical concerns of the research (where appropriate if you are planning research involving human participants, personal data or adverse environmental impact).
  • cite at least 2 and at most 5 books, chapters or journal articles in this section to describe and justify your research design

  • References (not included in word count) should:
    • list all the sources (academic books, journal articles, and policy papers) that you have cited in your proposal. Please use the University of Leeds Harvard style.[1] You are allowed to use sources in foreign languages, but you are required to include English translations of their titles.

Understanding the Dynamics and Consumption Patterns of Twitter
Introduction
In recent years, the rise of social media platforms has transformed the landscape of communication and information sharing. These platforms have become integral to people's lives, offering new avenues for interaction, collaboration, and content dissemination. Among the diverse categories of social media platforms, Twitter has emerged as a prominent and influential medium, revolutionizing how individuals, organizations, and communities connect and engage with one another. Twitter's unique structure, characterized by its brevity and speed, has captivated millions of users worldwide. With its distinctive feature of limiting posts to 280 characters, known as tweets, Twitter encourages concise and controlled communication among its registered profiles (Livraga et al., 2022). This simplicity, combined with the platform's real-time nature, facilitates the rapid exchange of information, breaking news updates, and the ability to engage in immediate conversations around various topics.
Twitter's significance goes beyond its popularity as a social networking service. Its impact extends to journalism, politics, marketing, and public discussion. For instance, journalists rely on Twitter to discover breaking news stories, gather eyewitness accounts, and disseminate information in real-time. Conversely, politicians leverage Twitter to connect directly with constituents, share policy announcements, and engage in public debates. Marketers recognize Twitter's potential to reach and engage with target audiences, promote products and services, and monitor consumer opinion (Appel et al., 2020). Additionally, researchers find Twitter a valuable resource for studying social behavior, tracking trends, and understanding information diffusion in the digital age.
The vast user base and the diverse range of topics discussed on Twitter provide a rich data source for studying human behavior and consumption patterns. By examining user interactions, content preferences, and engagement metrics, researchers can gain insights into how individuals consume information, express opinions, and participate in online communities (Arora et al., 2019). Understanding these dynamics helps researchers comprehend social media consumption's difficulties and offers valuable insights for marketers, policymakers, and social media platform developers. Therefore, conducting a comprehensive research study on Twitter's dynamics and consumption patterns is significant in unlocking the full potential of this influential platform. By researching deeper into how users consume and engage with content on Twitter, researchers can uncover valuable insights that will contribute to improving user experiences, developing effective communication strategies, and advancing their understanding of the ever-evolving digital landscape.
Literature Review
The following section comprehensively reviews the existing literature on Twitter's dynamics and consumption patterns. This review aims at synthesizing and analyzing the wealth of knowledge accumulated through academic research, empirical studies, and scholarly articles. By examining the extensive body of work in this field, we can gain valuable insights into the complexities of user behavior, content consumption, and engagement on the Twitter platform.
Understanding Twitter's Influence as a Social Media Platform
It is essential to acknowledge the ever-changing impact of social media platforms on communication and information dissemination to comprehend the significance of Twitter's dynamics and consumption patterns. Benter and Cawi's recent research highlighted the growing prominence of social media platforms as catalysts for real-time conversations, news sharing, and social interaction (Benter and Cawi, 2021). Within this context, Twitter has emerged as a prominent and influential medium, revolutionizing how individuals, organizations, and communities connect and engage.
Tweets with visual media generate higher engagement. Research shows that tweets with images or videos receive more retweets and replies than text-only tweets (McShane et al., 2021). This finding resonates with the Visual Communication Theory, emphasizing visual stimuli's efficiency and attention-capturing nature. Nonetheless, the influence of user interactions and conversations on user engagement creates a relationship between engagement in conversations and the likelihood of receiving engagement on an individual's tweets.
Exploring Twitter's Unique Structure and Features
Twitter's unique structure, characterized by its brevity and speed, has captivated millions of users worldwide. The platform's defining feature of limiting posts to 280 characters, known as tweets, encourages concise and monitored communication (Fudolig et al, 2022). This brevity, combined with the real-time nature of Twitter, facilitates a rapid exchange of information, breaking news updates, and immediate conversations around various topics.
One of the most used Twitter features is using the hashtag. Hashtags play a crucial role in organizing and categorizing content on Twitter. Users can include hashtags in their tweets to associate them with specific topics, events, or themes. Hashtags facilitate content discovery, enabling users to search for and follow discussions related to particular subjects (Belhadi et al., 2020). They also serve as a means of joining more extensive conversations and participating in broader trends. Trending topics, indicated by hashtags that experience a rise in popularity, provide a snapshot of the most-discussed and relevant subjects on Twitter (Alothali et al, 2020). These trends often reflect current events, news stories, or viral content. Therefore, users can explore trending topics to discover popular conversations and contribute to the collective discourse. Trending topics act as a social barometer, reflecting the pulse of global and local conversations. The literature has extensively discussed these distinctive characteristics of Twitter, emphasizing their impact on user behavior and content consumption.
Examining User Behavior and Consumption Patterns on Twitter
Understanding how users consume and engage with Twitter content is paramount for various stakeholders, including researchers, marketers, policymakers, and social media platform developers. Recent research done by policymakers from Twitter Analytics analyzes the prevalent content consumption patterns on Twitter, examining the types of content consumed, factors influencing content preferences, and how users discover and engage with information (Aswani et al., 2019). Additionally, scholars have explored the various forms of user engagement on Twitter, investigating factors that drive engagement and the impact of engagement metrics on content visibility and virality.
Recent research studies indicate a positive correlation between tweet length and user engagement. Shorter tweets receive higher levels of engagement, possibly due to reduced cognitive load and increased ease of information processing (Schwarz et al, 2021). This finding aligns with the Information Processing Theory, which suggests individuals have limited cognitive capacity and prefer concise information.
The Role of Twitter in Information Diffusion and Public Discourse
Twitter's influence extends beyond individual interactions, significantly influencing information diffusion and public discourse. Researchers have shown how information spreads on Twitter, examining the mechanisms of retweeting, the role of influential users, and the impact of hashtags and trending topics on information propagation (Kearney, 2019). Additionally, several studies have investigated the potential for misinformation to spread on the platform and the implications for public opinion and decision-making.
Considering User Demographics and Variations in Consumption Patterns
Understanding how different user demographics influence content consumption and engagement patterns on Twitter is crucial for tailoring communication strategies and optimizing user experiences. Scholars have examined potential variations in content preferences, interaction styles, and motivations for using the platform across different demographic groups, such as age, gender, and location.
In short, understanding the factors that drive user engagement on Twitter has significant implications. For instance, businesses can utilize this knowledge to enhance their social media strategies, optimize content creation, and improve brand-consumer interactions (Ikae and Savoy, 2022). Researchers can gain insights into information diffusion, the spread of online trends, and the formation of online communities.
Despite the existing body of literature, there is a need for further research in this area. Many studies focus on individual factors influencing engagement, but a comprehensive analysis considering multiple variables needs to be included. This research project aims to fill this gap by adopting a mixed-methods approach to investigate the combined effects of tweet length, visual media, and user interactions on Twitter engagement. Doing so will contribute to a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics of Twitter consumption patterns.
Research Questions
To achieve the research objective, the study will address the following key research questions.
1 What are the prevalent content consumption patterns on Twitter, influencing factors, and bot account activity?
2 How do users engage with information on Twitter?
Hypothesis
The following are possible hypotheses for the research study on Twitter's consumption patterns and dynamics.
Hypothesis 1: There is a positive correlation between the length of tweets and user engagement, measured by metrics such as likes, retweets, and replies.
The Information Processing Theory suggests that individuals have limited cognitive capacity and prefer concise and quickly processed information. In t...
