1.0 Introduction
The increasing competition among business organizations implies the increasing demand for strategies that can steer the relevance of the organizations. Businesses often assess the environment to advance strategic options that they believe to be unique and attractive to consumers (Abbas et al., 2019). Over time, different strategies including balanced scorecards, strategic options development analysis (SODA), and generic strategies like differentiation or cost leadership have been adopted (Zhou et al., 2021). While the strategies remain relevant, the operational environment is changing, a prospect that motivates key players to adapt (Brammer and Pavelin, 2016). Presently, one of the most swaying factors in strategy formulation is sustainability. Both consumers and businesses have grown sensitive to challenges such as pollution and depletion of natural resources. To adapt, some businesses have adopted corporate social responsibility (CSR) as a strategy for adaptation. One of the industries in which CSR is notable is the automotive industry (Kim, 2019). Considering their high carbon footprint, organizations and stakeholders in the automotive industry see CSR as a strategic option through which to revitalize their operations, stay relevant, steer sustainability, and save their images. The growing popularity of CSR warrants a deeper exploration, especially in an industry such as motor vehicle manufacturing. This study will assess CSR inputs in the automotive industry, with emphasis on Tesla Inc. The analysis should be vital in determining the role of CSR as a strategy and its impacts on market, cost, and environmental performance.
1 Background
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a broad business concept that is fast gaining traction in the business world due to its implied impacts. CSR casually constitutes the commitment by a business organization to execute its business ethically (Iglesiaset al., 2018). In the context of adhering to CSR initiatives, business organizations can manage their processes and activities while also considering their social, economic, and environmental impacts. CSR initiatives also foster the value of business operations to prospects like human rights (Kim et al., 2017). In present-day business operations, CSR initiatives are critical as they anchor transparency and accountability from businesses (Chang and Yeh, 2017). In industries like motor vehicle manufacturing, CSR has evolved from a periphery strategy to a core strategic option.
The choice for the automotive sector and Tesla Inc. in this study stems from a range of factors. Primarily, the automotive industry stands at the core of the sustainability issues of the world presently (Chang, 2017). The International Energy Agency (IEA) reports that the transportation sector contributes to 24% of the global carbon dioxide (CO2) footprint. Largely, the harm comes from the use of fossil fuels. However, such trends are poised to change with the introduction of companies such as Tesla that manufacture electric vehicles. The Impact Report 2023 indicates that electric vehicles will reduce CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion by 1 gigatonne per year by 2030. Such a move could stage the automotive industry at the core of the fight against greenhouse gas emissions.
Tesla’s accommodation in this study is based on the leading role that it has undertaken in steering sustainability. By introducing the EVs, Tesla is said to have contributed to a reduction of automotive emissions by over 13.4 million metric tonnes of CO2 since 2012 (Kim, 2019). Tesla has also committed to other solutions like solar panels and battery storage systems. All such inputs have had significant impacts on Tesla’s operations. For instance, the company’s market capitalization has increased to $800 billion in 2023. Further, Tesla has shown changes in cost efficiencies with the production of battery packs reducing by 56% since 2016. Bearing the above attributes, Tesla is a standout candidate when it comes to assessing CSR through the lenses of market, cost, and environmental performance.
1.2 Statement of Problems
While CSR is lauded as a key strategic tool for contemporary businesses, questions remain about its viability. Largely, there is a lack of consensus on the tangible impacts of CSR on key organizational performance metrics such as environmental sustainability, operational costs, and market competitiveness. Companies are still struggling to quantify the outcomes of CSR initiatives (Brammer and Pavelin, 2016). The challenges can be generalized to industry leaders including Tesla. While reports indicate that Tesla has been vital in reducing emissions in the automotive industry, there are questions about the impacts of such inputs on the market performance, cost structure, and environmental performance (Chang and Yeh, 2017). Efforts must be made to determine whether Tesla’s success in the market stems from its innovativeness or CSR initiatives. The same applies to the cost and environmental implications of the strategies that are largely unaddressed.
1.3 Research Aim
This study will aim to assess the impacts of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on the market, cost, and environmental performance of Tesla Inc.
1 Research Objectives
The study will address the above aim with specific consideration to the following objectives.
1 To examine the specific CSR initiatives at Tesla and their implementation.
2 To analyze how CSR strategies affect the market growth of Tesla.
3 To explore the influence of CSR practices on Tesla’s operational and cost structures.
4 To assess how Tesla’s CSR initiatives affect its impacts on environmental sustainability.
2 Research Questions
1 Which CSR strategies does Tesla use?

The sector-specific knowledge could be vital in showcasing the literature advancements in CSR inputs. Secondly, the findings of this study will be important in various practical aspects such as in guiding decisions when it comes to CSR strategic implementation or in assessing investor insights. Thirdly, the findings of this study will be significant to policymaking and society. That is, it will form a basis for sustainability advocacy, inform regulatory frameworks, and steer consumer awareness. Overall, the findings of this study should change views and perceptions about CSR and its implementation.
4 Research Rationale
The rationale for this study is based on the growing popularity of CSR in business strategic decisions. Companies need to understand the quantitative and qualitative outcomes of the strategies that they implement. The findings should help to dissociate CSR from aspects like innovation in assessing market performance. It will also bridge the academic and practical perspectives of CSR applications. This study also resonates with the personal objective of understanding and participating in sustainable practices.
1.8 Outline Significance
The study will be structured to address its aim and objectives. Besides the introduction chapter, the study will also have a literature review chapter from where the researcher will showcase knowledge gaps in the research topic. The literature review will open a platform to design the study, collect data, and analyze the data. The final chapters will synthesize the data and link them to the objectives. The outline is significant as it will help to address each question emanating from the topic.
Chapter Two: Literature Review
2.1 Introduction
The literature review chapter will explore existing studies that explore the same topic. The review intends to showcase some of the gaps in knowledge that this study will attempt to address. For a detailed review, the analysis is grounded on theoretical frameworks such as the stakeholder theory and the triple bottom line framework. The review also accommodates an exploration of the dimensions of CSR relative to the operational structure at Tesla Inc.
2.2 Theoretical Frameworks
2.2.1 The Stakeholder Theory
Various theoretical frameworks can be deployed to underpin CSR and its application in contemporary business settings. Primary among such theories is the stakeholder theory. The stakeholder theory challenges the conventional objective of business organizations to focus only on the interests of their shareholders (Hameed et al., 2021). The proponents of the stakeholder theory argue that all the stakeholders whose interests are affected by the actions of an organization should be considered in various strategic decisions. The stakeholder theory is marked with three perspectives (Chang, 2017). The first perspective is the ethical argument in which businesses should have the moral obligation to consider the interests of all stakeholders in making strategic decisions. The second perspective is the instrumental argument in which the possibilities of a business's success are considered high if the organizations accommodate all the stakeholders (Rasoolet al., 2019a). Finally, the framework fosters the legal argument in which the interests of certain stakeholders are necessary for consideration in outlining the strategies of a business entity. In the context of adopting CSR, the three perspectives foster an organizational focus on the needs of all stakeholders through legal, instrumental, or ethical avenues.
2.2.2 Triple Bottom Line Framework (TBL)
Triple bottom framework (TBL) is the other model that can be used to assess the implementation of CSR in business organizations as a competitive strategy. In TBL, businesses are encouraged to consider the social and environmental impacts of their decisions (Iglesiaset al., 2018). The implementation of TBL emphasizes three key concepts. Firstly, businesses must make their decisions based on the needs of the people. People represent social equity and responsibility for organizations (Hameed et al., 2021). As businesses formulate and implement strategies, they have to accommodate the people's prospects such as human rights, impacts on the community, and employee well-being. The second pillar of TBL is the planet (Hameed et al., 2021). It is the planet factor that guides organizations through environmental conservation inputs. The planet factor emphasizes prospects such as resource conservation, climate action, and biodiversity (Rasoolet al., 2019a). The final prospect of TBL profit fosters the economic viability and financial performance of an organization. The profit factor emphasizes revenue generation, profitability, shareholder value, and long-term sustainability (Yang et al., 2020). The three pillars of TBL should guide business organizations on how to structure their CSR strategies to befit the needs of all the stakeholders.
