Bibliography
Reich, Aliya. 2012. "Adrift in Paris: Marc Chagall and the Negotiation of Identity through Painting, 1911-1914." All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) 745.
The article offers a detailed account of Marc Chagall life and experience in Paris. Since the final decades of the nineteenth century, Paris became central to artistic and cultural development in the modern Europe. The city developed a reputation that it was a breeding ground for people who contributed to the development of art movements, including Impressionism, Neo-Impressionism, and Fauvism. Subsequently, Paris drew artists and writers from various parts of the world, including Marc Chagall, who arrived in the City on May 1911. The author offers a cultural, social, and artistic environment of Chagall in Paris. The source is important in offering a detailed understanding of Chagall as an artist.
According to the author, Chagall’s personality complemented his artistic productions. He is described as a person with a quiet and distrustful nature. He also interacted well with his friend and fellow artist Cendrars, who contributed to Chagall’s work, including the naming of the art piece I and the village among others. The author alludes that Cendrars also wrote a poem about Chagall that shows he was a frenetic creator. In this context, Cendrars imagines him sitting up in bed, rushing to the canvas, and beginning to work immediately, at any time of the day or night. Cendrars also associates Chagall with the Russian, Jewish and village identities by stating that he painted with his Jewish hometown and Russian provinces. These associations are evident in Chagall’s works such as I and the village, confirming that the artist was intrinsically wrapped up in these identities. From the poem, Cendrars draws directly from the imagery of Chagall’s works, which shows that his paintings were a construct of his past experiences.
The author states that the collaboration and mutual creativity that is represented by the friendship between Cendrars and Chagall was a critical aspect of his work. The two artists formed an intense collaboration that led to Cendrars naming Chagall’s work and him creating content that related to Cendrars poems and dreamlike imagery. Resultantly, Chagall recognized Cendrars’s contribution in his piece of work called the Homage by including his name alongside that of his other three friends.
The sentiments of the author are essential for the development of the research on I and the village. The details offered show the development of Chagall as an artist in the modern world. Particularly, the source of the title is understood. The author offers insights that show Chagall's works were inspired by personal experiences despite the fact that there were contributions by his close friends. Moreover, he also had an impact on these people by also contributing to their creativity as evident in Cendrars’s poem.
I chose this article because it offers a detailed construction of Chagall’s artistic experience. The author states that the review focuses on the artist in the modern art world, which was centered in Paris. In this context, the analysis of the paper presents various accounts of Chagall’s life, including his works and friends. Subsequently, it facilitates a clear understanding of the kind of person the artist was and the inspiration behind his work. Fundamentally, the article is a key source for understanding how Chagall’s titles to his works were developed.
The article will contribute significantly in supplementing information from other authors. Notably, there is very little literature about the author and the piece of work under review in this research. The article lacks visuals that can help to relate to the text, but it offers a satisfactory discussion of the author and his life in Paris. Despite the detailed account of Chagall’s life and work relations, the article is not centered on his work. Consequently, it lacks critical information in understanding this piece of I and the village.
