Yohji Yamamoto: How Personal Experience is Involved In His Design

Fashion designers like Yohji Yamamoto have successfully transferred their thoughts into designs to make unique concepts that differ from those of traditional fashion designers. Although the practice of fashion design can be traced back to early centuries, not much has been revealed about the designers' personal experiences in the design process. Many fashion designers are inspired by their tradition, which they majorly integrate into their design practice as part of their identity. Great fashion designers like Yohji Yamamoto, whose inspiration comes from his tradition has influenced the world of fashion, making himself a name. This research proposal will explore the relationship of fashion design and cultural values, the research will majorly focus on Yohji Yamamoto whose design appeals to all ages. The research will analyze how his experiences influenced his creativity, making him one of the leading fashion designers in the world. The research process aims at expanding the knowledge to understand the impact of cultural values on product development, especially within the global arena. My research will take a quantitative approach; I will review the specific literature and hold one on one meeting with a faculty member to assist in identifying relevant articles and books for my research. Reviewing literature means finding, reading and summarizing specific published articles relevant to the research question. My search includes specific fashion databases like WGSN. WGN is a fashion trend forecaster, with a vast collection of fashion designs that also contain an extensive collection of fashion images. Another important database for my research will be ARTstor. ARTstor is a digital image library with photographs of fashions throughout the ages. Part of my research process will include Google scholar, which is also one of the useful resources for research. Google scholar is a general internet search engine with useful references. If time allows, I will consult faculty members with vast knowledge about fashion trends to help in identifying relevant articles and books for my research. My research is significant because Yohji Yamamoto is known for his avant-garde designs, different from traditional designers. Yamamoto is known for his innovative spirit and design; he creates designs that surpass the current fashion trends.
