Research Proposal Instructions:
I am writing a research proposal based on the following topic: Digital or Print?: A Study of Young Adults’ preferences for Graphic Novel Formats and their Impact on Literacy and Engagement in Libraries. My research question is as follows: What is the relationship between the choice of graphic novel format (digital or print) and literacy outcomes among young adults, particularly in terms of comprehension, retention, and engagement?
Can you write a literature review with 7 peer reviewed research articles from scholarly journals related to this topic which I will include in my order? Please include an introduction and use in-text citations (APA format) in the literature review. The following includes the precise instructions for my research proposal:
1. Title of your proposal
2. Research question(s): One or two research questions are required. Remember that this
question (s) you pose in this section is supposed to be answered by the results you reached
from data collection and analysis you write (as a plan) in the Research Methods section.
3. Motivation: explain why you chose this specific topic for the research proposal.
4. Importance of your research: you have to justify why your research is important to do. Your
justification should be based on the related previous studies (means literature review). You
have to include at least 7 research articles for literature review.
5. Research Methods should include:
a) Variables (independent and dependent variables): you have to demonstrate your
conceptualization and operationalization for your variables. And your study should
be an explanatory or evaluation study.
b) Sample size and the description of recruitment of study participants.
b) Data collection method: an experimental design. You have to describe specific
steps how to collect data and the components of your study design. Pay attention to
experimental groups you are supposed to design for your study.
c) A sampling method and justification for your selection of the specific sampling
method
d) Specific tasks you are going to give to your study participants. Explain how these
tasks are related to your variables you defined above (5. a)).
d) Data analysis: explain and justify how to analyze your data statistically (descriptive
statistics such as mean, %, or standard deviation will be fine). Very briefly (one
paragraph).
6. Follow APA style guide for citation for in-text citations and references (at the end of your
term paper).
7. Timetable (hypothetical) for conducting your study.
8. Include the components of a research paper in your term paper/project with proper subheadings
(e.g., Introduction, Research Questions, Literature Review, Research Methods (the most
critical section of your research proposal for this class), etc.).
9. A proposal is a kind of a specific plan how you conduct a research with a research question (s).
Therefore, no need to include Results, Findings, and Conclusion sections in your paper.
10. All you write for this proposal should be drawn your own research ideas.
Minimum of 4 pages (single- spaced, excluding figures, tables, and references) are required and
will count for 15% of the semester grade.

Digital or Print? A Study of Young Adults’ Preferences for Graphic Novel Formats and their Impact on Literacy and Engagement in Libraries
Introduction
In the rapidly changing world of reading and literary consumption, graphic novels, combining visual and textual narratives, have especially become popular with teenagers. As the platform of this media increases in print and digital media, it is essential to figure out young adult readers’ preferences and how such formats influence literacy development and engagement (Martinez & Harmon, 2011). Graphic novels’ combination of sequential art and narration gives a special reading experience that combines visual power with literary richness. This multimodal narrative approach may help overcome the language barriers and involve young adults, thus helping fight against illiteracy by increasing understanding, retention, and engagement.
Digital technologies have empowered readers to interact with graphic novels on various devices and platforms. This shuffle to digital media has raised certain fears about the effect of format preference on reading outcomes and young adult readers. Libraries should get to the bottom of the connection between graphic novel format variants and literacy outcomes to be in the vanguard and fulfill their customers’ demands (Martinez & Harmon, 2011). Libraries might use such research to base collection development, program design, and tactics to engage teenagers in reading and the library on these findings. This paper analyzes the impact of digital and printed graphic novels on teens’ understandability, memorization, and engagement. The research will involve the design of experimental surveys and using both quantitative and qualitative data analysis. The study explores how reading and learning habits may impact literacy and library operations.
Research Question
What is the relationship between the choice of graphic novel format (digital or print) and literacy outcomes among young adults, particularly in terms of comprehension, retention, and engagement?
Objective
The main objective of this research is to explore the effects of the format of a graphic novel (digital or print) on literacy outcomes of young adults, including the aspects of comprehension, retention, and engagement. This study will explore the possible variation in the graphic novel literacy effects following the format of the graphic novel. The study will provide tips that will help libraries and educational institutions promote literacy and reader engagement through this medium.
Scope
This study encompasses young adults ranging from 18 to 25 years old; this age group is the biggest of graphic novel readers and library users. Research will be designed with the graphic novel form in mind, and how the digital and print versions affect the understanding, retention, and level of involvement. Participants will be randomly assigned to either digital or print graphic novel group within experimental design. The research will employ mixed-methods approach to gather data, which will comprise distribution of comprehension quizzes, delayed comprehension tests, self-reported engagement surveys, focus group discussions and reading journals. The outcomes of the study will affect libraries and educational institutions in the sphere of collections, planning of programs, and literacy programs which focus on youth. With the help of the research that has been done on the connection between the format of graphic novels and the results in the literacy, these organizations can have the evidence to make the decisions about the resource allocation, technology integration, and the creation of a vibrant and functional environment for reading.
Significance
The key contribution of this study is that it adds to the existing knowledge about the role of graphic novels in literacy and reader engagement. The previous research has been focused on the overall outcomes of graphic novels on literacy (Snowball, 2011). Though this aspect requires further research in order to understand the impact of digital versus print graphic books on young adult literacy. As digital technologies grow increasingly dominant in reading and writing, understanding how different formats affect comprehension, retention, and engagement is crucial. Therefore, the paper will give us the knowledge about the reasons why the young adults are choosing this book or not, and about their reading experience (Snowball, 2011). The data will be used to develop a reading plan that, on the one hand, will be improving the skills and, on the other hand, will be growing the passion towards the reading. The study can as well find libraries and schools the way to equip themselves with the resources needed through the community demand and interests (Snowball, 2011). Libraries and schools might evaluate and choose the most efficient literacy encouraging formats in order to utilize their available resources better and to serve young adult readers at their best. It can have an impact on policy, attraction policy, and a better society that is literacy and culture based.
Literature Review
Researchers have devoted considerable attention to the graphic novel style of storytelling, pointing out the effectiveness of this medium in making society more involved with the stories and in building people’s reading and critical thinking skills simultaneously. This literature review aims to provide a collection of scholarly articles different researchers have written in the field. It culminates with a comprehensive summary of the existing body of knowledge on the topic.
Hammond (2012) asserts that the present definition of text includes “different combinations of the modes of print, images, sound, gesture, and movement which include digital texts as well as film, music, television, drama, and print” (p. 23). Gavigan (2014) conducted a study concerning circulation and collection analysis in six middle school libraries to determine the influence of graphic novel collections’ circulation and collection. The study found that graphic novels were the most appealing to students and thus contributed to the rise of reading engagement, which led to the development of literacy (Gavigan, 2014). The study showed that students who read graphic novels had better comprehension of the text and vocabulary development and were more involved in the text and the topic. The visual elements of graphic novels played a part in the students’ understanding and retention of the narrative, and the special storytelling format appeared to have made the students want to read more.
Halsband and Grimm (2018) argued that webcomic archives bring challenges and opportunities. Digital graphic novels are responsible for making reading more available and for readers to become better involved. Halsband and Grimm pointed out that archiving and preserving these digital materials must be viewed as leading to their longevity. On the other hand, the authors focused on the unique characteristics of digital platforms like hyperlinks, animations, and interactive features, making reading graphic novels more enjoyable an...
