How can I reduce impulsive behavior in children during circle time in a Montessori classroom
Research Proposal Instructions:
I am a certified Montessori teacher and have been teaching for four years in a Montessori school. Through my past experiences and observations in the Montessori program, I\'ve learned that all children have a natural inclination toward self-learning. Children have the opportunity to develop and cultivate a sense of integrity and achieve their highest possible potential throughout their environment. The Montessori program has always intrigued me. Throughout the years I have seen how children have been nourished in this surrounding and I want to learn the ways in which I will be able to help other children in this curriculum. Montessori classes are organized to encompass an age span, which allows younger students to experience the daily stimulation of older role models, who in turn blossom in the responsibilities of leadership. Students not only learn with each other but also from each other.
This year I will lead cultural topics (science and social studies), as well as assist in language arts and math. The K-1 class of'10-'11 is comprised of 23 kindergarteners (14 boys and 9 girls) and 15 first graders (6 boys and 9 girls) as well as three Montessori certified teachers. The individualized approach of the Montessori method and materials allows each child to grow independently. The mission of the school is to provide a personalized education of unparalleled excellence for students of diverse backgrounds. As a student-centered, parent-supported independent school that promotes joy in learning and positive character development. We believe that the Montessori approach provides the best foundation for children as they become productive citizens of the world and the Montessori method offers the instillation of a passion for learning in children of all ages. Helping and teaching our students to think critically and creatively, to express themselves clearly, and to have the courage to act on and defend their convictions; and affirming that the responsibilities of education are shared by the home and the school.
My research will be conducted in the classroom, three times a week for six weeks. In a Montessori environment, the teacher prepares and presents the materials needed for the child to carry out his/her great work, and offer them to the child in the form of individual or small group presentations. Once an initial presentation or lesson has been given the activities are freely chosen and frequently repeated according to a child\'s needs. At times, it is natural for young children to show excitement during a presentation. On the other hand, it is extremely difficult when children interrupt or blurt out when a lesson is presented. Some even seem upset and frustrated when not given a chance to ask questions or make comments. But with these interruptions, the teacher loses focus and has to regain her thoughts. This takes away instruction time and loses time on work period.
Redirecting student behavior in a Montessori classroom relates to how a Montessori teacher interacts with a child when she is misbehaving. Because of the importance placed on the well-prepared environment and well-prepared teachers, there should be relatively little misbehavior when the teacher is experienced and the children are normalized.
Dr. Montessori said "Discipline is therefore attained indirectly, that is, by developing activity in spontaneous work." (Discovery of the Child) As children concentrate on their work, their need to misbehave decreases as they move toward normalization. The term normalization is a term borrowed from anthropology and means "becoming a contributing member of society\" (Dr. Rita Shaefer Zener, 2006). Normalization describes the process that occurs in the Montessori classroom, where young children (usually with short attention spans) learn to focus and concentrate for sustained periods of time, while deriving self-satisfaction from their work. Normalization occurs when development is proceeding normally.
An important part of growing up is learning how to show emotions at appropriate times and in appropriate ways. Children who learn to control their frustrations, and who use words to express their feelings, gets along better with others. Lack of impulse control and an inability to manage anger are often the cause of behavior problems in children and contribute to problems with friendships during the school years. If we expect students to learn and act appropriately, we must structure the learning environment so that these skills can be addressed and practiced. It is necessary to target specific behaviors for appropriate instruction and assessment to occur.
Action Plan
I am going to try to have a smaller group during presentations. Instead of 38 children all in one setting, I will divide them up into smaller groups. Also I will have my colleagues on hand to assist with the more difficult child/children. If a child does interrupts during the presentation, a reminder of “quiet time” and asks him/her to sit at a table to listen quietly.
Data Collection
For three times a week I will collect data and write down what I observe after each presentation. With the collected data I will need to examine how the lesson was presented and the topic that was introduced to the children. I will have checklists to remind myself of the steps on how the teacher presented the presentation. Also, a journal will be log with the date and time of each presentation and the result from the students. Did they seem interested? If not, could I have made it more interesting? What happens after the presentation? I might need to do a follow up on how effective and how much retention each child gain. Doe a child need the presentation repeated? Maybe a child needs a one on one lesson? With these observations, I will reflect on my teaching and ask my two co-teachers to critique and give feedbacks on how I can improve my lessons so that the children can sit quietly and focus on me. Also I will get the other teachers observation reports on the children as well and how they seem to relate to the group.
Next Steps
From my findings I will implement the effective ways in which I can help my teaching and to better each child. Also, I can share my finding with my colleagues at the faculty meeting each month.

Chapter 1
Introduction
The following is a research proposal that is aimed at devising on some ways that a teacher can help there pupils to reduce impulsive behaviors on the children during circle time in a Montessori classroom. It should therefore be noted that the children have got have some certain inclination towards self learning.
Being a trained teacher who has been in the teaching profession for the past four years, and I have been a keen follower of the Montessori program, I would like to conduct would like to conduct a research that aimed at helping and identifying the reasons behind the impulsive behaviors of the children and at the same time help the teachers to provide the children with there school activities and help them to succeed in his school and other curriculum activities that will help the children interact with each other freely(Olson Et al, 1990).
Impulsive behavior in children is a form of behavior that is to be introduced when the children are denied the opportunity to show their capability in the class room this is where the child will try to attract some attention from the teacher and this attentions is attracted when the child behaves in various antisocial behaviors that will result to the children behaving in an unpleasant behavior that will not be acceptable in the classroom (Moeller et al, 2007).
Abstract
In this paper I am going to look at the highlight on the plight of the teachers go through in there dairy activities, and the main reason for this paper is to device some ways that are aimed at reducing the rates of impulsive behaviors in the children in the Montessori class, the paper will also take the readers through various ways that the teachers would implement in order to help the children that experiences that them teachers can be able to come up with the problems they will encounter with these kinds of behaviors on the children (Kim et al, 2001).
I am also going to conduct a statistics based on the behaviors of these children, it’s also going to highlight on some proposed ways that the teacher can be able to employ or adopt in order to reduce the cases of the impulsive behaviors on the children/ pupils, this survey will be conducted in the Montessori classes, that will provide the teachers with the most specific information that is clearly related to the children, therefore the study that will be extensively be conducted in this form of environment in order to know the real factors that affect the children into behaving into the manner they behave (Olson. Et al, 1990).
This will also be of help for the success of the proposed project as the data that will be collected will be from the qualified teachers that will be conducting this research as they understand these children properly and they also know the way they can deal with this children impulsive behaviors( HYPERLINK "/Thomas-J.-Zirpoli/e/B001IXM6MS/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_1" Zirpoli, 2007).
Psychological experts indicates that the mind of a child is made in a form that it can not take a lot of time to concentrate in one activity at a time for a long time, this actually makes it difficult for the children to indulge in productive class works, therefore this poor rates of concentration in the class work makes it difficult for them to concentrate on there studies, thus in this paper the child will develop impulsive behaviors as a result of their short concentration life span, that makes it difficult for them to concentrate in the classes and resulting to the impulsive behaviors.
These low concentration levels in children will result to the children to develop complications that are resulted from emotional distress contributed from the poor attention accorded to them by there parents, teachers or the even colleagues, this creating a type of environment that is not favorable for the child, thus this paper will ensure that the child and the teachers are adequate environment that will reduce these cases of impulsive behaviors commonly amongst children.
Thesis statement
It noted that the children are the most cautious people; they will always want to attract the attention of the adults and fellow children this is by always trying to want to stand out, this attention gives them the ideas that are accepted and what they are doing right and will be evaluated by the others.
Psychology indicates that the mind and behaviors of a child is always easily manipulated and they will feel superior if they are given any sort of attention and this will result to them behaving in a manner that is recommended. Thus in this proposal I will try improvising the conditions that are seen as the key causes that results to the children adopting to the impulsive form of behavior, thus making it difficult for the children to understand and practice what they study in class (Mayo Clinic staff, 2010) .
Impulsive behavior in kids, is a kind of behavior that occurs abruptly without the kid having full control of it, therefore a kid who is involved in this kind of behavior doesn’t have any thoughts of the consequences that may result from the behavior he indulges in, (Olson. Et al, 1990) the situation or the environment in which the children are therefore the children are supposed to be given utmost care that will ensure that they feel involved and recognized with their teachers and fellow children thus reducing cases of them indulging in the impulsive behavior in attempts aimed at improving the children relations and attention while In the classroom ( HYPERLINK "/Thomas-J.-Zirpoli/e/B001IXM6MS/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_1" Zirpoli, 2007).
The surrounding environment in which individuals live in is seen as the key determinant of the individuals behaviors, this is likely to occur when the individuals try very hard to adopt or fit in the given environment and if these attempts by the individuals don’t seem to bare any fruit the individual will automatically device a way that will elicit some form of attraction and attention from the people around the individual this is were the individual will have to negative consequences as a result of the emotional distress experienced by the individual (Moeller et al, 2007).
Objectives and aims of the research
It’s clearly found that the children that develop these impulsive behaviors are as a result of the children not receiving proper attention from there teachers and colleagues they will be considered to be very unpredictable as they will develop behaviors that will harm them or there colleagues in the classroom or they would develop complications later in life on matters relating to there relationship with there social interaction with other pupils thus making it difficult for the child to develop good social behaviors later on in life( HYPERLINK "/Thomas-J.-Zirpoli/e/B001IXM6MS/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_1" Zirpoli, 2007).
The main objective of this research proposal are varied and arranged in two diverse objectives most notably the Broad and the Specific objectives. The Broad objectives of this proposal is to check on the ways that the teachers can work hand in hand with the children and the children’s parents in providing the children with a required environment that will facilitate that the children in the Montessori classes to reduce the cases of the children developing impulsive behaviors when in the classes and at the same time the increase the rate of concentration of the children in the classroom and also cooperation and friendship amongst the children while in the classroom (Tull, 2010).
Specific objectives is to identify some ways and the most common impulsive behaviors that the individuals indulge in and at some point the teachers will strive at preventing the occurrences of the children indulging in this kind of behaviors this is by improvising some activities that the children will indulge in order to reduce these cases of the children losing there attentions and resorting to the impulsive behavior (Kim et al, 2001).
The research paper is also aimed at identifying the estimated reported rates of children who mostly indulge in the impulsive form of behaviors and at the same time the results from the research will be used by the teacher’s world wide to reduce and manage the cases of the children indulging in impulsive behaviors, (Olson. Et al, 1990) thus the teacher will develop new skills that will be aimed at reducing the cases of the impulsive behaviors amongst the children in the class and also help the children to achieve there respective high performance and behaviors in future.
Research hypothesis and questions
Statistics from The department of education and children welfare has indicated that some measures are in place in reducing these cases if impulsive behaviors amongst children, some of the research questions that I will be tackling in this research proposal will include the following aspects.
The paper will look at the measures and contribution of the Montessori school solving the occurrence of the impulsive behaviors amongst the children
The Causes of the problem amongst the children
Some ways of reducing or avoiding the occurrence of these behaviors amongst the children
It will also look at the contributions of the teachers, and parents in the impulsive behavior in the children.
The scope of the study
My research will be conducted in the Montessori classes; this is where I will be able to collect the necessary information regarding to the behaviors of the children in the classes, these will provide us with the necessary statistics that will help in dealing with the impulsive behavior that is being encountered in the children from the small section of the selected children in the Montessori classes, the age that I will use when conducting the sturdy ranges of the children in the kindergarten 1 to the first graders and we will use professional teachers who will ensure that the results that the information from the class are accurate as they are from a reliable source.
Chapter II
Literature Review
Impulsive behaviors is a kind of behavior that occurs to an individual without the individual having any control, plan, intention, or consideration for the consequences that may result from the behavior. Psychologists indicates that this type of behavior is associated to the positive consequences a reason as to why people develop impulsive behavior is for the emotional pain release but it also has negative consequences that are resulted from emotional distress of an individual that may result to the individual into regret his actions and also affects the relationship between the individuals or even harm the others people living in the surrounding environment of the individual ( HYPERLINK "/Thomas-J.-Zirpoli/e/B001IXM6MS/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_1" Zirpoli, 2007).
Impulsive behaviors is commonly reported in children this is as a result of there poor concentration span this results to the children developing this form of behaviors because as they indulge in any given activity their concentration toward doing a particular task shifts automatically to the other without them initiating it thus making it difficult for them to concentrate of a given activity for a long time, this makes it impossible for them to indulge in a given activity to its success if they don’t feel that they are accorded some from of attention from the people in the surrounding environment this includes the teachers colleagues or even the parents or any adult around them (Verhulst, 2002).
The lack of supervision, attention or guidance from the surrounding people will make it difficult for the children to develop positive behaviors, (Olson. Et al, 1990) therefore if they don’t receive these kinds of attentions from the people around them they will automatically develop negative / impulsive behaviors that will be generated unconsciously in attempts aimed at receiving concentration and attention from the teachers, colleagues and parents so that they can note that they are around and want to be given some appreciations and attention or it may be as a result of the loosed interest due to their short concentration span ( HYPERLINK "/Thomas-J.-Zirpoli/e/B001IXM6MS/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_1" Zirpoli, 2007).
In the research paper I’m going to talk about impulsive behavior in children, thus I will have to check on the cases of this kind of behaviors in the children, (Kim et al, 2001) and also evaluate the positive contributions of the Montessori school in evaluating the impulsive behaviors of the children that affects there relations with the other children and also helping the children to develop positive behaviors that will be of greater benefit to the children in there late stages of life as they will have adopted the positive behaviors, the research will also evaluate the causes of this kind of behavior amongst the children, it will also check on ways that are supposed to be implemented in order to avoid and reduce the occurrence of this behaviors on the children, ( HYPERLINK "/Lesley-Britton/e/B001KDWEZU/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_1" Britton, 1992). It also looks at the positive contributions of the parents and teachers in reducing this kind of behaviors on the children.
What is an impulsive behavior?
According to previous research that have been carried out by psychologists, they have stated that impulsive behavior is a poor kind of behavior in an individual, this indicates that the individuals will always perform any form of action without stopping and thinking of the consequences that may result from the action or words he is going to associate with (Tull, 2010).
The psychologists have been indicating that the impulsive behavior always results to the negatives results, ( HYPERLINK "/Thomas-J.-Zirpoli/e/B001IXM6MS/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_1" Zirpoli, 2007)thus the individual’s will always perform an action that will no be of great importance to the individual as it will result to the individual to have poor outcomes from his behaviors this is due to the unconscious behavior that is practiced by the individual without proper thinking of the consequences.
The research that has been previously carried out indicates that impulsive behavior is common amongst young people, as these studies that have been conducted in the school atmosphere; this is where it became clear that the younger students were more prone to develop impulsive behaviors than the older children (Olson Et al, 1990). This clearly shows that the younger children who happen to have a short concentration span and encounter this problem more often as they are have a short concentration span.
Several studies have been previously conducted in this topic of impulsive behaviors commonly experienced in young kids ranging from the infant stages to the grade one child, and the research has always indicated that this kind of behaviors are common amongst them this is because the psychology indicate that the children of this age have a kind of mind that has short concentration span that makes it difficult for the children to concentrate on what they are doing for a very long time thus making it difficult for them to have the desired attention in the classroom and other places where they are required to conduct or present positive behaviors ( HYPERLINK "/Lesley-Britton/e/B001KDWEZU/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_1" Britton, 1992).
The previous sturdy have also stated that this is a type of disorder is juts the same as the other types of disorders that affects the other individuals including the adults, therefore this kind of disorder is treatable, (Olson. Et al, 1990) and therefore any patient that is suffering from impulsive behavior disorder can be treated.
What is Montessori Program?
Montessori program, is a program that provide young children with a basic freedom in their environment and materials that will enable the child to learn some actions independently without having any external force that will affect their activities, (Montessori, 1907) thus this free environment ensures the children exploit and display their own self without feeling impelled into performing there own natural actions.
Causes of impulsive behaviors in children
The researchers have also indicated that there are several causes of the disorder that is common to the patients who...
