Research Proposal Instructions:
Now that you have seen many examples of how research questions are explored in the lab, it is your turn to try your hand at designing a hypothetical experiment. Pick one of these four research questions and then briefly describe a way to test it. Please describe the research methods in terms of:
the participants (how many?)
the stimuli (what kind of music?)
how the stimuli are delivered (loudspeakers? headphones? iPad?)
how participants are tested (individually in the lab or in a group setting?)
Describe the independent variable(s)—what you will manipulate—and the dependent variable(s)—what you will measure. Describe the measuring tool you will use—questionnaire, videotaped observation, head-turn procedure, etc.
Four Choices

Hypothetical Experiment: In dancing or moving to music, do children 4-7 years of age follow the movements of an adult or another child?
Introduction
Much research has been done on children's behavior and what drives and influences them. The Social Learning theory predicts that Adult and peer models are very important in the adoption, development, and practice of behavioral skills in children (Schachner, 2025). The ability to imitate other individuals is crucial in early life in the learning and socialization process. Although it is already proven that children mimic the actions of adults and peers, it remains unclear whether children in the age group 4-7 years old imitate adults or their peers, especially in matters of music and motions (Herbert, 2024). This age matters regarding the social context of the behavior, since children are learning about the social cues and how to apply them in their behavior.
Based on the aforementioned study, the children may be inclined to follow the adults due to their authority (Estevan, 2025). The peer models can, however, foster cooperation and participation in group activities. The study aims to determine the probability of children in this age group emulating an adult or another child whenever they are asked to move with music. The guiding Research question of the research is as follows:
In dancing or moving to music, do children 4-7 years of age follow the movements of an adult or another child?
Participants
The sample will comprise 40 children aged 4-7 with an equal number of boys and girls. The sample will be selected randomly in local schools and daycare centers; therefore, it will be of mixed origin. Incl...
