Maryland joined the likes of New York and Connecticut in expanding assault weapon bans and limiting the capacity of magazines after a horrific Newton elementary school shooting which claimed the lives of 20 students and six adults in December.  According to gun control advocates, the fingerprint requirements will deny gun access to criminals, because it will make them unwilling to buy firearms for those people who don’t have them. Certain opponents say that the bill erodes the Second Amendment right and punishes law-abiding citizens without any focus on the lawbreakers. Even though the measure bans 45 types of assault weapons, people who already have a license for it can continue to retain its possession. Similarly, those who order it before October 1 when the law would come in to effect would also be able to keep them. Those individuals who have inadvertently been assigned to a mental health facility won’t be permitted to have a gun.  According to certain critics, Maryland already has very strong laws, including a thorough background check and a seven-day waiting period to make a gun purchase. Moreover, the state doesn’t even have a loophole to allow the private sales of guns at gun shows without the same background that licensed dealers are required to obtain. "We have those protections, and what we're doing here is basically saying to folks who are concerned about their Second Amendment rights is, you know, `We don't care,"' according to Senator Allan Kitteman R-Howard. However, a Senate President Thomas V, Mike Miller speaking of his own gun collection observed that people will be able to keep the guns they have, even the assault weapons, regardless of the imposed ban. "It doesn't affect a single gun that anybody has," Miller, D-Calvert, said, noting shotguns and rifles are not affected. Later, Connecticut’s Governor Dannel P. Malloy also signed into law, encompassing new sanctions on weapons and a huge capacity of ammunition magazines as a response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre there.  As per a statement of the White House, Vice President Joe Biden invited O’Malley and other officials in Connecticut and expressed his thanks for working to pass new gun laws. Biden, moreover, has been heading President Barack Obama’s efforts in convincing the Congress to pass federal laws, which mitigate gun violence. O’Malley, who is also weighing a presidential bid in 2016, initiated the Maryland bill in the month of January. According to some republican critics, the bill revolves around building O’Malley’s resume as opposed to public safety and security. According to one senator, this would be great for political and presidential aspirations. However, he opined that it would not bring any change in the safety of the citizens of Maryland. On the other hand, Senator Frosh, D-Montgomery disagreed and expressed his home that this bill would do something very important; improve and save lives.
