Where is the USA’s Domestic Policy Headed?
Introduction
Recently, the domestic policy of the United States of America (USA) is controversial with the current president, Donald Trump, undoing setbacks on several measures that Barrack Obama’s administration had implemented previously. In particular, it involves the actions and plans of the national government meant to address various issues that affect Americans in their daily lives. The federal government comes up with domestic policy after proper consultations with relevant stakeholders, such as the local and state governments. One of the most significant problems with the Trump administration is that it does not involve these stakeholders fully when addressing various things that affect Americans. For this reason, the government appears unprepared or rather not ready to handle upcoming internal issues. The USA’s domestic policy is headed in the wrong direction since the federal government seems blind or ignorant of the problems affecting citizens.
Summary
Although every government has its agendas and manifestos that are established to meet the public needs, the Trump administration appears to be against several things that benefit ordinary citizens. On 23rd March 2010, Obama, who was the president of the USA at that time, signed the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and it became a law. The ACA has three primary objectives that enhance citizens’ healthcare needs1. They include reducing medical costs, increasing the healthcare insurance coverage, and improving the quality of patient care in private and public health centers. Since the ACA was implemented, over 20 million Americans enjoyed the benefits associated with it. However, the smiles of these people are about to turn into anger as the Trump administration is planning to scrap the law2. The president argues that the state spends more money to maintain the ACA and that its costs outweigh the benefits. By doing so, the USA will go back to where it was about a decade ago3. The universal health will no longer be there, and only the wealthy individuals will afford and access high-quality healthcare services across the USA. Consequently, all low and middle-income earners who have been enjoying the accessibility and affordability of medical services will no longer receive such benefits.
The most disturbing and worrying thing about the Trump administration is that it operates as if it does not understand the plights of middle and low-income citizens. The government appears to promote the wishes of rich people, and it forgets that those people at the top positions require ordinary citizens in their multi-million enterprises. Instead of the state focusing on various ways to close the ever-increasing gap between the wealthy and poor individuals, it seems to concentrate on making the rich people amass more affluence4. The poor domestic policy makes ordinary individuals to have no shoulder to lean on since the little benefits they used to enjoy are about to be taken away.
When it comes to taxation, the Trump administration encourages wealthy people to use various tax-cut strategies. In reality, the president himself was criticized during the campaign season since his companies were found to have been evading taxes. That is the reason why the government seems to prioritize the needs of the elite people where ordinary citizens are left out to work out things on their own5. An effective domestic policy creates an equal platform that fosters the growth and development of small and medium-sized businesses. Additionally, it ensures that ordinary citizens can rise to the top easily without having to overcome multiple challenges. Many of the individuals that Trump has appointed or nominated in his government are those running multi-million corporations. On that note, ordinary citizens do not have numerous representatives in the federal government, which makes their voices unheard regardless of how loud it is.
There exist other things that show why the USA domestic policy is headed in the wrong direction. They include reduced investments in public infrastructure, the crackdown of immigration, the building of the USA and Mexico border wall, labeling of Muslim immigrants, skepticism of global warming, and the disruption of federal agency-employee relationships. In this era, anyone who opposes relevant measures that are meant to eradicate the adverse effects of climate change must be negligent. Trump does not believe that global warming is a significant problem, which portrays his lack of interest in maintaining a good environment that promotes the lives of upcoming generations. Although the government is against extremism, it is discriminatory to do extreme vetting in immigrants, particularly those from specific countries. Instead, the state should unite people regardless of their religious, cultural, racial, and sexual differences. Since 22nd December 2018, over 800,000 federal workers do not know what to do after the government closed nine agencies6. For this reason, it is clear that the Trump administration does not have the best interest of its citizens at heart. Indeed, it does not care what these workers are eating or how they are coping with their lives. When it comes to the construction of the USA-Mexico border wall, the Trump administration was asking for about $5.7 billion from the Congress6. However, building the wall might not be the most effective solution to combat illegal immigration. Instead, that money can be channeled to the healthcare industry or improve the public infrastructure.
Critique
Although the majority of Republicans and few Democrats believe that the economy is headed in the right direction, the reality is that these effects are short-term. For example, if the loopholes in the taxation system continue to exist, it means that many wealthy people will evade tax7. Regardless of whether these policies are right or wrong, the USA economy will suffer in the long run. The government revenues might decrease, which means that there will be no money for infrastructure developments or for carrying out public projects. In essence, middle and low-income earners are likely to face numerous challenges as compared to the elites who have already accumulated more wealth than they need for their entire lifetime.
Many Americans at the bottom of the social hierarchy are facing hard times while trying to cope up with the rising cost of living standards. Apparently, to make the matter worse, the minimum wage still stands at around $8 per hour. Approximately 2/3 of Americans require the Trump administration to do something and raise the minimum wage to about $15 per hour8. In reality, effective domestic policies should be implemented based on the things that improve the lives of the majority of people. Besides, it is worth remembering that in a democratic nation, the majority always has the say and way. For example, rather than the Trump admini...
