LIDAR has been used for topographic mapping since the mid-1990s and it uses laser based measurement techniques to generate a 3D point coordinates on an object`s surface relative to the instrument. It uses a time-of-flight principle for earth science and topographic mapping since it allows longer ranges than phase-based and triangulation short range methods. The time of flight on LIDAR uses pulses of laser light, reflector-less EDMs, to determine the object range. The scanning mechanism provides angles of deflection using a mirror system. These are the vectors that enable determination of 3D coordinates and enables dense cloud to be quickly captured in an arbitrary but scaled 3D coordinate system.
