World over population is a global aspect that has affected every facet of human life. There has been increment in the world population at a rate that was not anticipated in the last few decades. The world over population is a matter of concern for every one interested in the well being of the human beings, because; when the population is higher than the resources can sustain, there is bound to be problems not only in the economic dimensions but also in the social and political engagements. In this paper, the aspects of world over population have been analyzed especially in respect to the social effects impacted by the same.
In order to achieve a viable analysis, there has been research in the peer reviewed articles. This has enabled a deeply rooted research that articulates the points on the world over population.
World over population
World overpopulation can simply be said to be the existence of a higher number of human beings than the available resources are capable of sustaining. World over population can also be viewed as the existence of such a high number of people such that it would be impossible to satisfy their human needs without depleting the locally available non-renewable resources. In this regard, overpopulation is viewed in terms of the relationship between the people and their environment. This is to mean that; without the aspect of depletion of the resources, there would be no need to be concerned about over population. But then, the human beings extract the necessities of their existence from the environment, hence, it would not make sense if the environment is not considered in addressing the existing high number of the human beings.
Lam (p 2187) note that; the world over population can be attributed to several factors. The first factor is the increased births. When people give birth at a higher rate there is bound to be a higher population. When this trend continues for a longer time, the world is filled with more people than the available resources can satisfy without getting depleted. At such a point, there is over population. Another factor that has led to over population is the decreased mortality rate. This has been mainly influenced by the advancement in the medical field. This has greatly lowered the mortality rate in both children and adult hence a higher population. Diseases that used to kill people in high numbers before are not doing so anymore because; there is medicine to both prevent to treat them.
Overpopulation in the world is considered in terms of the available resources. It is in this regard that people talk of the quality of life and the carrying capacity. This is because even if an area has a less number of people yet the resources are limited, there is overpopulation there. Existence of human being must be accompanied by availability of adequate resources so that there is no regard of over population.
According to Heinz (p 267) the human population has been growing at an alarming rate in the recent past. There have been suggestions that draconian child birth control, third world war as well as pandemics, could still leave the world with a higher population than the available resources are able to sustain. There has been more advocacy on the cutting down on the consumption of natural resources as well as exploring means of recycling instead of focusing on the reduction of the population through means such as birth control.
Prospects
The world population is set to increase from the current estimated seven billion people to 10.4 billion in 2100. This is a very high population in comparison to the resources required to sustain such a number of people. In coming up with these figures; several appropriate factors such as fertility, mortality as well as the mothers’ age at first child. Schlanger & Elijah (p 33) assert that; several factors that are inclined to alter those figures in terms of reducing the figure have also been considered such as war, climate change and reduced fertility. Family planning and reproduction education are said not to have great impact in the current generation. It is the sixth or seventh generation that could benefit from these kinds of interventions. What is bound to elicit much impact is the orientation of the people towards sustainability through technological and social innovations.
The technological innovations denote the application of technologies so that there is more production, say f food, from utilization of fewer resources. A good example is the green houses which are capable of producing much agricultural resources by utilizing fewer resources such as land in comparison to the conventional production. Social innovations on the other hand, denote the utilization of social ties in combating the effects of the overpopulation to the environment. For instance, sharing of the same car for people who go to work in the same area and reside in the same locality. This kind of initiative can result to reduction of the harmful emissions released by the vehic...
