The networks help people to contribute to online debates at the same time learn from others and they have enhanced the behavioral changes in terms of users’ initial entry point, search, browsing and purchasing behavior (Carr 2008).Keeping up with friends and fads adds joy, nevertheless it could cause trouble for users. Introduction
Gradually, the social media is becoming the new Internet’s search function as people now spend less time navigating the Internet autonomously instead they are making decisions founded on friend’s recommendation chiefly known as “friend-casting”. As a consequent, social media is changing user expectations on privacy, suitable online behavior and etiquette (Carr 2008). In the past, internet accessibility was limited by the fact that end users could not afford desktops and laptops but social networking is etched on smart phone usage an element which augments the degree of social networking usability. A report spawned by ITU titled Measuring the Information Society 2010, mobile the broadband subscription was rated at 640 million by the end of the year 2009 by the year 2010 the number was estimated at one billion(ITU News 2010). This number has grown bountifully over the years as new applications are spawned across the globe to pave way for social networking services, and are set to exceed 1 billion this year. By the year 2010, Face book had 500 million users, if it was a country it would be the third most populated nation after China and India.
Such an exuberant medium yet poses potential harm to the end-users; this is seemingly a farfetched idea, yet a closer look at the factual information concerning the use of this medium reveals perturbing trends. Nicholas Carr has spawned an enlightening article “Is Google making Us Stupid? What The Internet is Doing to our Brains”. The author brings to the forefront the ramifications of internet usage and particularly the addiction allied with social media consumers. Carr points to the excessive use of internet services – for research, reading, and communication claiming that they may adversely affect may have on the mental psyche of such individuals (Carr 2008). Carr is especially keen on such matters as the user’s thought processes and attention-span lengths. On the other hand, there are some aspects of social networking which makes it both dangerous and callous weapon in destroying people’s relations at the same time compromising human self-esteem.
Often, there have been cases of cyber bullying that have led to suicides, in the social networking the modulation is not stringent and a pool of strangers ‘users’ mingle, share information, chat and share opinions, in the process some uncouth people could result to recklessly abuse, malign or slander their fellow users without giving consideration on the damage that they may cause. The individuals being bullied online often receive messages that affront their general appearance, their intelligence and in some instance both (Clipson et al 4). In such instances, the bullied parties could resolve to walk away from the media logging into their site could become unbearable yet its very difficult to turn away from the allure of the ever active and entertaining medium.
The social medium enchains people to the others perception, by reading some of the messages and comments that appear on socials such as Face book, Twitter, Ask.fm, the recipients of the information can be traumatized; although there is no physical assault both mental and psychological assaults are commonly associated with this medium as aspect which could garner adverse repercussions (Haikton 2013). There is a huge cluster of young internet users who are so dependent on the social networking sites on almost all spheres of their lives, unknown to the same platform which garners their approval can be the source of their difficulties as reputation can be compromised and consequences spurs from job to personal life.
