Introduction
Ashley, an eight-year-old is heard in a room abusing her mother for not showing up on time for a school party. The young girl denounces to a watching audience that this was not her mother and resorts to a shameful action with the aim of disgracing her mother who is seen crying. Her mother was divorced when Ashley was 2 years old and took two jobs to sustain the family. However, as a result of this break up, Ashley has grown in a manner that affected her behavior. On the other hand, Tim is one of the sons of poor parent living in a servant squatter. Tim has been raised in a family that shows love and Tim understands the essence of behaving appropriately and acting maturely in accordance to his age. These two children give a picture of how parents raise their children and the effects of these approaches on their behaviors.
Children behave differently depending on the environments that they grow in, the people they live with and many other aspects (Guan, 2016). However, some are born with different values in them and only parents can help modify their children and prevent them from following erroneous paths. It is important to note that for parents, they should try and learn more about parenting early enough even before a child is born. It is essential to consider that parents play a great role in shaping the future of their children.
This paper seeks to determine the effects of bad parenting and later analyze the best strategies for good parenting. Parents who spoil their children always allow the children to be taken care of instead of letting the children to take care of themselves and solve their own problems, a factor that teaches them how to adapt to the environment and the challenges presented (Reporter, Daily Mail 2013). As a result of this, the spoilt children are bound the face challenges in adapting to the environment and social factors, a factor that lowers their self-esteem since they are incapable of doing things of their own and copying to the environment.
Reasons Why Parents Spoil their Children
Some of the reasons that parents spoil their children include:
Overindulgence:
In this case, parents are considered as wanting to give their children everything that they never had before. The parents consequently ensure that their kids are different from others and would spend to make them stand out as different from the rest (Guan, 2016). Children in this kind of life grow believing that they can have whatever they require and if what is needed is not available, this gives a green light for deviant behavior.
Wealth:
Considering that America is turning out as one of the wealthiest nations, parents are considered as living huge lives, a factor that affects the manner in which they raise their children. This has seen families ensure that their children have nannies, cleaners and cookers who perform every work for the children (Guan, 2016). With this kind of parenting, the children grow up believing that they do not have responsibilities to handle. When such children are exposed to a different environment, they struggle in coping.
Broken Marriages:
Several marriages today have broken since marriages today are not considered and regarded as in traditional times. Divorce is currently considered a normal part of life. However, parents fail to consider the effects of divorce in the lives of their children (Mazie, 2016). Children are affected by divorces, a factor that negatively impacts the manner in which they are brought up by their parents. In order for these parents to buy their children’s love, they spoil them with gifts not knowing that the effects of divorce affect the manner in which they grow.
Friendship over Parenting:
Some parents have chosen to raise their children as their friend’s thus creating a false sense of equality between them and their children (Mazie, 2016). These children grow up missing the roles of the parents in their lives.
Workaholic Society:
Several parents’ today work through the day and night in meeting the needs of the family. This has seen focus diverted from parenting into achieving economic sustainability for the family, a factor that affects the manner in which children are raised (Vocativ, 2016).Children within such families find no time to spend with their parents, a factor that results in the development of deviant behaviors.
How to Raise Children Effectively
Most spoilt children are as a result of poor guidance from their guardians who sometimes become exceedingly lenient. Some parents tend to give in to their children’s demands while others do not limit them to rules and regulations. This view is supported by Dr. Phil’s views that allege that parenting does not only entail the aspect of offering children material goods, but should incorporate the element of parents acting like role models for their children and showing them how to live right (Dr. Phil.2016). Children should be punished whenever they make mistakes which most of the parents do not do fearing that the children might end up rejecting them. It is vital to note that whenever a child makes a mistake and goes unpunished, he or she develops a resisting power against the parent. Additionally, it makes them feel supreme than their parents and eventually begin acting strange in different situations. It is equally important to consider that most children begin to learn their parent’s behavior towards them when they are extremely young.
When parents are not familiar with parenting techniques, it is usually very easy for their children to have the worst characters even if the parents are disciplined (Bjelland, et al 2016). All parents should know that needs and wants are two very different things and they should not confuse them at any given moment. When a child wants something and unfortunately the parent is not in a position to offer, it is incorrect to think that the child is being mistreated.
It is important to note that children should at times be left alone during difficult moments. This enables them to learn how to be independent and not always look up to their parents even when they can handle situations by themselves (Bjelland, et al 2016). Additionally, parents should not give a lot of attention to their children as this makes them sluggish and mostly end up disrespecting them. Parents should not let their children have power over them. This means that when a child wants something and the parent can’t provide or feels like it is not important, he or she has the authority to snub and even apply force if the child is reluctant.
According to a research that has been conducted recently, it is evident that most parents spend most of their time working and have little or no time for their children. Most of them prefer their children being alone to having nannies looking after them, which gives them a lot of freedom, and this is one reason why children are spoiled today ([email protected], 2016). It is vital to note that when a child is spoiled, he or she gets hurt at the end. On the other hand, parents end up being frustrated and the society at large. Mostly, when children are not given the right directions, even life itself becomes a threat to them and this make them unfit for the world ahead. Due to this, parents should follow the following strategies which would them shape the future of their children.
Firstly, it is essential for every guardian to note that parenting is not as easy as most people think and should be taken seriously. For this to have high-quality results, both parents should watch each other’s back and be good examples their children (Bjelland, et al 2016). It is equally important for every household to have its own rules and regulations that should be adhered by everyone. For step parents, they should be very careful on how they handle the children especially during the early stages. Most children consider step parents as their enemies and thus they should be cautious and not impose too much pressure on them.
The second important thing that parents should remember is that for a child it is fine for him or her to cry. Whenever a child cries, it is not right for the parent to try calming them down using things like toys and chocolates as this will make things worse.
